The rest of the world seems to have forgotten a little comic book movie called “Spawn”, but Todd McFarlane ain’t gonna be forgetting it so easily. The comic book writer/artist/toy maker is still insistent on bringing his first Image Comics creation to life on the big screen once again, but this time on his own terms. To be honest with you, when I first heard his idea about making Spawn a shadowy bogeyman that hides in the background and is rarely seen in the movie, I thought it was kind of stupid. Now? I’m starting to warm to the idea. Why not a Spawn movie where Spawn isn’t the main character? Could work.
Here’s what McFarlane told MTV about his ideas, and why he’d want DiCaprio in the lead:
“The main character isn’t Spawn, per se, it’s the guy chasing Spawn. And I’ve always had [Leonardo] DiCaprio in the back of my mind.
“It’s a big wish, but his dad was a big fan of underground comic books and he came from that. It’s not a big special-effects movie, it’s a character movie, so I could shoot it in 40-50 days and you don’t have to budget that much time.”
DiCaprio is currently attached to a gazilion projects right now, so I doubt if he’d be interested, or have the time. Even if he couldn’t get DiCaprio, McFarlane should definitely continue to pursue the movie. The more I think about it, the more I think this could actually work.
Of course, to make it really work, he would have to stay away from the bloated clown this time…
Below: “Whoa whoa whoa, Bats! There’s only room for one shadowy bogeyman on this perch, buddy!”
