McFarlane Says He wants DiCaprio for his Spawn Reboot

The rest of the world seems to have forgotten a little comic book movie called “Spawn”, but Todd McFarlane ain’t gonna be forgetting it so easily. The comic book writer/artist/toy maker is still insistent on bringing his first Image Comics creation to life on the big screen once again, but this time on his own terms. To be honest with you, when I first heard his idea about making Spawn a shadowy bogeyman that hides in the background and is rarely seen in the movie, I thought it was kind of stupid. Now? I’m starting to warm to the idea. Why not a Spawn movie where Spawn isn’t the main character? Could work.

Here’s what McFarlane told MTV about his ideas, and why he’d want DiCaprio in the lead:

“The main character isn’t Spawn, per se, it’s the guy chasing Spawn. And I’ve always had [Leonardo] DiCaprio in the back of my mind.

“It’s a big wish, but his dad was a big fan of underground comic books and he came from that. It’s not a big special-effects movie, it’s a character movie, so I could shoot it in 40-50 days and you don’t have to budget that much time.”

DiCaprio is currently attached to a gazilion projects right now, so I doubt if he’d be interested, or have the time. Even if he couldn’t get DiCaprio, McFarlane should definitely continue to pursue the movie. The more I think about it, the more I think this could actually work.

Of course, to make it really work, he would have to stay away from the bloated clown this time…

Below: “Whoa whoa whoa, Bats! There’s only room for one shadowy bogeyman on this perch, buddy!”

    Spunk and Battiman!
I never thought of that! I bet that comic duo will be good!

    BRING SPUNK 2 or Remake!
    We are tired of waiting!

Spawn movie not based about Spawn!? that’s so dumb!
    It’s like saying
“To be honest with you, when I first heard his idea about making Spawn a shadowy bogeyman that hides in the background and is rarely seen in the movie, I thought it was kind of stupid.” LOL

Also we need a Spawn in the Demon’s Hand remake in HD or number 2!

what if the director of 300 and watchMen directs it. I think his vision has proven worthy of dark comics like Spawn. He did very well with Watchmen and he nailed 300. I think he & Mcfarlene can come up with faithful ideas on mixing the dectective story with real stories from the comics. But I think his origin would be best told by the end of the movie so that way Dicaprio understands Spawn was a great man and a tragedy. For those who know the comics well, whom was the villian with the SKULL MAKE-Up? He had lots of weapons and I think he and AL SIMMONS AKA SPAWN WERE SOLDIERS IN VIETNAM. He would be a great villian, or atleast a good fight for spawn till he tears him apart. But Violator has to be in it. That monster Clown man makes a perfect villian for Spawn because he never leaves Spawn alone.

I think this is a great idea… The concept of Spawn being a shadowy creature in the background and a human trying to hunt him, makes allot of sense considering this is a demon we’re talking about and I don’t think anybody can relate to a demon. However, most of us can relate to the people who come into contact with spawn. So making a human the lead will help us understand how they see and feel about Spawn, which will hopefully make the movie into a horror more than fantasy. To be honest Spawn isn’t your average hero, so he deserves a unique film.

I think Spawn is that rare hero who performs demonic, painful and evil acts in the process of saving lives.

It is a great idea. But of course will get to see spawn more and more become a favorite rather then monster. Make violator the real monster that spawn chases till the end. I mean I know it’s alot but i think if dicaprio is in it, make Denziel Washington SPAWN. And make Violator or his clown form be played by somebody good. Maybe Andy Serkis from Lord of the Rings(Golum) or even Danny Devito…maybe not but it depends on how evil they can make it. I want like Violator to be really scary both clown and deamon, but also very faithful to his character…like not like John Lu what ever his last name is…the guy who played him from the bad spawn movie. But Denziel good be a great pick for a dark and old warrior in a dark world.

I think itll be a good moive for people with imagination. A comic book lovers type of movie. If it has a great atmosphere along with good story writing im sure itll pass for a hit. Even if spawn isnt the main attraction of the film, making him more ominious (long slinking chains his cape, green eyes in a pitch black background etc) could actually work if done right. Granted that its a huge IF but seeing as Macfarlane is a greedy prick, i think this SPAWN 2 will be watched over as his baby and itll get all the attention from him =’ing a hit.

However with so much of this leaning on the viewers imagination itll really have to be made well. I mean who hasnt seen a movie when they were younger and thought, goddamn that movie was cool, and then watch it now in disbelief that you thought it could pass for cool.

Atmospehre, replay value, and of course making spawn ( i hope to god they take inspiration from Ashley woods contributions to the series!!!) one bad mother will all certainly come into play, all the materials are there, but whats not certain is can Macfarlane make this movie stick?.
