McFarlane Writing Spawn 2 Movie
By Nix | May 31, 2007 (2:20 pm)
Comic book writer, artist, and toy maker Todd McFarlane has decided that the 1997 movie “Spawn”, based on his comic book series of the same name, is pure crap, and he wants to make a “Spawn 2″, except this Spawn will have no ties to the last Spawn movie, and McFarlane is tinkering with the idea of just calling this one “Spawn” again. Which, if true, would be really confusing. Personally I think it would be cooler if he called it, “Spawn 2: Pwnd”. Get it? Ah, well. Anyways, Bloody-Disgusting quotes McFarlane as saying about the new Spawn script he’s writing, “I can make a spooky, suspenseful thriller that will scare the crap out of you.” I don’t know what Todd is talking about; the first one scared the crap out of me — it was that awful.
A CIA agent killed by his own boss for witnessing his corruption, Al Simmons was sent to hell. To see his wife one more time, he made a deal with the demon Malebolgia to become an undead “hellspawn.” Spawn has tried to retain his own humanity while finding a way out of Malebolgia’s control and battling a variety of enemies, both supernatural and mafia-related.

when are you going to come out with a sequel finnaly to the great origional movie your fans are still waiting?
The first Spawn movie was good but I wish had the CGI we have today. I think they should remake the film or make a new one but make more scarier and hardcore especially when it comes to action scenes, just like the comics. The new film should show more of the real dark side of Spawn and his real battle within himself both mentally and physically. I believe it should be a longer film and have more than one bad guy for Spawn to go toe to toe with. The film should be raised to newer highest.
The first spawn film was awesome, I don’t care what anybody says about it, it was just plain cool at the time when it came out yeah sure it’s gonna be a little cheesy at the time but think about the technology in films and movie making at the time of 1997 it wasn’t at all the best to today’s standards which is the never ending cycle of making movies and criticizing them, Hell someone will probably say in 10 years from now well the technology at todays standard wasn’t good enough and say that the standard 10 years from now will be better but honestly I wouldn’t mind seeing a new spawn film. The fan base and the community is long overdue for this film in fact 10 years overdue if I might add. However the film will be just a bit better if they seriously follow what some of the fans are screaming for show more of the darkside of spawn, yes have it so he speaks in the film and yes have him seen as well not the rumor of “all you’ll see is him popping out of the shadows and killing someone and then disappearing to make the people go” “what the hell was that”. I believe the movie will be better if it’s a direct sequel in a sense but also a re-boot of the franchise as Todd McFarlane said. Well to be honest he can do both by making it a direct sequel and a re-boot of the franchise at the same time, to do this all Todd would have to do is use some of the best in animation techniques or CGI techniques to better the special effects and step up the acting a bit, I have to admit yes in the first film there were some acting screw up’s but it was a time to dive or delve into that genre of movie at the time because the industry and the fans called for it! I really do hope this movie works out in the end as I am a very big fan of spawn and the spawn comic books.
I’m a big fan of spawn…but when i first saw the film i knew it should of been rated R! because the HBO version was R rated! but tthe movie it’s self was aight…but when ever they descide to create part 2…shock everyone by creating a horror movie based on the two cops, the movie shouldnt be about spawn as much…let him be the ghost that pops up when you here that spooky music playing….and with todays graphics they can really capture the death in spawns appearence. honestly the movie should be about simmons daughter being kidnapped by some sicko and spawn finds him before the cops do…but of course some in betweens such as a hooker getting killed in the wrong alley way! as this guy thinks he’s gotten away with murder and free ass..lol…this guy quitely walks thru the alley…a loud bang of a dumpster being slammed with extreme force hits the wall…here comes that spooky music…and here comes spawn! let the homeless tell the story of the ghost in the alleys that they see every once in a blue moon. The two cops should have the main roles in the movie from leads in the kidnappings too them getting a brief look at spawn
I hope another Spawn movie comes out soon.. I liked the first one and now I wan’t to see another one.
I agree with the idea of a remake of the first film. It needs to be R rated with gore and lots of violence. You know, the things Spawn is known for. I don’t think that the live action film lived up to the name. They also need to have Chapel in it. The movie ruined it for me in the beginning when they showed Winn kill Al Simmons and not Chapel. And if they are going to go through with it, they need to find some way to get John Leguizamo to play as the violator again. You have to admit it, he did play as the clown very well. There is a long list of changes I would make to the movie. I would like to hear what you guys think about what i said. good or bad.
John Leguizamo nailed the clown!!! i cant see anyone else playing the role…i now that the second film while explode the box office! they just have to put the movie out under an “R” rating…honestly this movie shouldnt be for children…you guys remember the first preditor movie? lets get gorey!!!
This is great idea. the first spawn film was really cool but suffered from several major issues.
1.) the first major problem was the script. it moved way too quickly through an incredibly long and complicated plot. too many main characters and themes were tossed aside so that Spawn could duke it out with Violator at the end. the film should have been broken into three films so that the characters could all be included and developed properly. where was Overkill? what about the cops? and what about Billy Kincaid? you never even get a chance to know or understand the people who live in the Alley. and then there’s the countdown. every time spawn uses his powers the count down speeds. this could serve as a great suspense builder in a new film…or series of them.
2.) the second issue was with character changes. the Spawn character should not have been tampered with. he did not need a whole slew of new powers. what was with the suction cup hands? and the cape. the cape was pretty cool but not necessary. the effect was trumped up by the animators at ILM because cloth deformer technology was new at the time and they wanted to show off what their machines could do. effects should enhance without being completely obvious. infact if the effects are done right you should not even know they are there. the technology is well developed now and could still do well to produce Spawns constantly flowing (and always, not sometimes, present) tattered cape. the animators would have done better to spend their time and processing power on making Malebosia’s mouth move or the Hell environment not look like a video game. bottom line, know the character and only develop what is necessary to make the film believable.
3.) timing. when the film came out the fan base was huge and the film was greatly hyped and anticipated. the timing issue was not the fault of the films creators but rather came from George Lucas. while Spawn was in post-production at ILM Lucas announced his intentions to create the Star Wars prequels and all production at ILM was rushed out the doors to create space for Phantom Menace. nothing could be done about it at the time but the Star Wars films are finished now and the folks at ILM are still the best in the industry. I would love to see what they could do with a Hell environment now.
4.) Ratings. Spawn may be a comic hero (or anti-hero rather) but he is not for children, and he is not an action hero. these changes were imposed by the studio to insure ticket sales and this issue should be resolved early in the development stage if any new film is ever developed. A Spawn film should be a bloody “R” rated, noir style horror film peppered with action elements, just like the comics and cartoons.
Some advice for Todd MacFarlane (I hope you read this). finish your thriller script and executive produce the project yourself. nobody knows your characters and plot like you do. Write a trilogy like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars or X-men. try to get ILM again and go with Lions Gate studio, they won’t try to change your films to get ticket sales. and PLEASE, scare the hell out of me.
I’m so happy if that movie make some great new effect and also more beat action cause SPAWN is the greathes hero in my favorite
I really hope they do come out with a new Spawn movie, like what was said before..it is long overdue. I also think beside making a new Spawn movie, they should make The Maxx movie. That would be awesome!!
YES!!!!! The Maxx…but you’ve got to wonder…How would that purple suit on film? Remember The Phantom? Terrible.
Get a world class wrestler or body builder with the proper shape and legs for Spawn. Spawn deserves the best. No more pre-fab muscle suits. Let his natural build be seen through a lycra type suit. Do a google search to find the company to do it. Make the suit right: black, red and white in the original places. Thanks! Can’t wait for the movie.
Tip: Whoever does a Superfriends movie will make a Billion dollars!
Is everyone here a moron? Or just 12 years old? The Movie adaptation of Spawn was terrible! I’m a huge fan of Spawn and find the story line to be one the most riveting in years. The depth of the mystery surrounding the two detectives as well as the personal struggle of Al Simmons in his afterlife carries the comic further than Spawn’s superpowers. The movie version glossed over all of the key plot points and focused instead on cgi that really wasn’t all that good anyway. Where was Spawn’s cape? The chains looked like they were about 4 ft long. And Micheal Jai White, while not a horrible actor, does not have the physique for Spawn….he’s too short. Martin Sheen as Jason? No way. The only good casting done for the movie was John Legquizamo…(probably misspelled). This is Hollywood at it’s worst…sacrificing quality material for a quick buck. Todd, we love you….PLEASE…GIVE US A SPAWN MOVIE THAT IS ON PAR WITH YOUR WONDERFUL COMIC.
I CAN PLAY THE NEXT SPAWN
The first Spawn movie was awesome, he really made it good.
Well in my own opinion Todd is the man in all ways and should continue with his work because he is the only one who could pull this off. Spawn is my favorite character of all.
