The man who has never seen an explosion that he hasn’t liked talks about the potential direction for Transformers 3 in a DVD extra for Revenge of the Fallen. His prognosis? Smaller, more intimate, more character driven. Perhaps darker. What exactly, then, was he doing with the first two films? I guess this answers humanity’s oldest question: is there an action sequence too big that not even Michael Bay can make it?
He also says that he is combing the Transformers lore looking for story ideas, and so there should be no end to the source material. He discusses further specifics below.
