After “House’s” Hugh Laurie ditched them, MGM had to find a replacement for their upcoming reboot of “Robocop”. I guess they didn’t waste a whole lot of time, because Michael Keaton has now been placed at the head of OmniCorp, the futuristic corporation in the “Robocop” world that pretty much controls everything, including the building of Robocop himself.
Keaton signs on to play Raymond Sellars in the film, which will star “The Killing’s” Joel Kinnaman as Alex Murphy, a hotshot Detroit City cop who gets himself blasted by bad guys and eventually resurrected as the half-cyborg Robocop, the future of law enforcement. Sellars is the film’s bad guy, so I reckon he has evil intentions with our hero.
Jose Padilha, who is set to direct the film, opines on Keaton’s casting:
Michael is the final addition to the amazing cast we have assembled for this film and it is so great to have the last puzzle piece in place. It is thrilling that everything has come together to bring this innovative new vision of RoboCop to life. We’ve got a great script, a great cast, some killer ED-209’s and I can’t wait to get Alex Murphy back on the streets.
Padilha’s film will co-star Gary Oldman as Robocop’s scientist creator, Samuel L. Jackson as a media mogul (originally thought to be the heavy, but apparently not with Sellars around), and Abbie Cornish as Alex Murphy’s long-suffering wife.
“Robocop” prowls the streets in 2013.
