Daryl Dixon’s troublesome (but ultimately redeemable) brother from the same motha will be heading into outer space for his latest adventure. Trades have Michael Rooker, who played Merle Dixon on AMC’s wildly popular “The Walking Dead” (seriously, the popularity of this show astounds me; who knew there was so much untapped love for zombies?) is the latest actor to enlist in James Gunn’s upcoming “Guardians of the Galaxy”.
Rooker will play the blue-skinned alien hunter Yondu in the movie, which will star Chris Pratt as a human pilot who ventures into outer space and becomes involved with a group of galaxy protectors called the Guardians of the Galaxy. General interstellar hijinks, we presume, ensue.
Zoe Saldana was previously cast as the green-skinned Gamora, while former wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista will play the green-skinned Drax the Destroyer. Basically, except for Pratt’s human character, everyone in this thing will have colored skin. (Maybe they should be called the Guardians of the Rainbow instead. Ahem.)
Yondu, we’re told, is “a game hunter of a primitive tribe native to Centauri IV, the first planet system to be colonized outside of the Sun’s solar system. He eventually bands together with fellow fugitives to form the superhero team” known as the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Since Yondu wasn’t featured in the official team photo Marvel released ages ago for the movie (below), I’m guessing he’ll be a side member, or maybe a background character.
You know, if Marvel and James Gunn can actually pull this movie off, more power to ‘em. I was never a very big fan of a “Guardians of the Galaxy” film precisely because of this. Way too many goofy and colorful (literally, in this case) alien characters running around. And we haven’t even started talking about the talking raccoon and tree yet…
Here’s a better look at Yondu doing what Yondu do:
