Relativity Media has officially announced that Mikael Hafstrom (“1408”, “The Rite”) has signed on to direct “Tunnels” for them. Hafstrom takes over behind the camera for Vincenzo Natali, who was originally attached to direct the movie adaptation of the popular Young Adult book series way back in 2010. He has since moved on, apparently.
Based on the series of books by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams (they’ve written five sequels with the sixth and final book in the series set for this Fall), the movie version will be set “beneath the streets of London, two teenage boys discover an incredible, hidden underground world where a secret civilization has been desperately waiting for a hero to save them all. The deeper they go, the closer they get to unearthing an evil that could destroy the world above and put an end to the lives they once lived.”
Yikes. Shoulda stayed topside, boys. Nothing good ever happens when you start digging.
Hafstrom just wrapped “The Tomb” with Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Andrew Lobel will write the screenplay.
“Tunnels” first surfaced as a possible movie way back in 2007, back when Young Adult novels were all the rage and everyone was snapping them up for movie adaptations like candy, thanks to some wizard kid name Harry Potter.
Mark Canton, Neil Canton, Danny Davids, and Ryan Kavanaugh are producing.
