Christopher Nolan is creating quite a queue of actresses for “The Dark Knight Rises”, the third installment of his Batman films, which Warner Bros has slated for release on July 20, 2012. Deadline reports that there are two main female leads. The first is a love interest for Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne, to replace Rachel Dawes, who got exploded by the Joker the last time out, and the second will be a villain, who will presumably operate in some sort of conjunction with Tom Hardy’s as yet unidentified villain.
The six actresses named are Rachel Weisz, Natalie Portman, Blake Lively, Keira Knightley, Anne Hathaway, and Naomi Watts. These are just the actresses that Nolan is going to meet with initially. As is his style, he is keeping the specifics of the roles under wraps, but that just provides more room for rampant speculation.
If you care, my particular preferences are as follows: I would like to see some combination of Weisz, Portman, or Watts in the available parts. Weisz has a darkness that could be really cool as a femme-fatale villain (Catwoman? Talia Al Ghul?), and she, as well as Portman and Watts could pull off either good or evil. Has Portman ever played a real badguy? None spring immediately to mind, but it might be a lot of fun to see her get villainous. As for the other three, even though she was good in “The Town”, I’m not completely sold on Lively, I often forget that Hathaway exists at all, and I just don’t like Knightley for some reason. She’s so skinny that she always seems to be on the verge of snapping in half, and her face always looks like something smells bad. But that’s just my opinion.
