Mortal Kombat: Legacy Web Series Episode 4 (of 9)

Fourth episode in Kevin Tancharoen’s “Mortal Kombat: Legacy” web series features a history/background of wardrobe-challenged Kitana and Mileena. Half of the episode is in animated form, which, I dunno, isn’t that kind of a gyp? Isn’t the whole point of this doing everything in live-action? Anyways.

Beautiful, athletic, and trained as highly skilled assassins, Kitana and Mileena have grown up thinking that they are sisters. Shao Kahn, Emperor of the Outworld, has tricked Shang Tsung into becoming his servant for Mortal Kombat by making him clone Mileena as a Tarkatan clone of Kitana, out of Shao Kahn’s fear that Kitana wouldn’t love him enough if she ever found out the truth about her Mother and Father.

Starring Aleks Paunovic as Shao Khan, Samantha Tjhia as Kitana, Jolene Tran as Mileena, Kirby Morrow as King Jerrod, Beatrice Ilg as Queen Sindel, Fraser Aitchieson as Baraka, and Johnson Phan as Shang Tsung.

What happened to the cooler, more realistic Baraka?

That was just for the short. When WB comissioned him to do this series, he got back to the original look, but still tweaked it a bit so he looked a little different than the rest of his race.

Yeah you could say that, but with the current trend of using animated sequences for both movies and games it fits well into the narrative of this episode. You can have some of the more fantastical elements without the budget. I’m sure the next hal will be all live action as we deal with their rivalry. I also liked the almost LOTR feel to the Edenia story and world. Though I wasn’t exactly feeling Shao Khan, as I’m used to a bigger musclular person with the helmet, but the dark knight/emperror look works well for this.

Well, is a hell of a cool way to save money. CGI to complete a scene like that would take my salary multiplied by a whole lotta times.

Exactly, and since they’re doing short form storytelling why waste all that money on effects for like 2 minutes of footage.

Terrible. I love anything Mortal Kombat but this isn’t the amazing reinvention we were hoping for. This is actually worse than MK: Annihilation somehow. The live action segments are like a bad SciFi channel original movie; and yes the ‘motion-comics’ style animations come off like a cop-out. It’s a shame they didn’t stick with the street-level concept of the ‘Rebirth’ short because they clearly don’t have the money or resources to do justice to the epic fantasy apects of the MK mythos and we end up with episodes like this.

The director always said the realism of “Rebirth” would give way to the fantasy aspects of the MK franchise and I think he’s done a good job. He never planned for it to be wholly realworld. He has a bigger budget here than he had for “Rebirth” but I do agree the sets and backgrounds look off. They should’ve gone the “Spartacus”/”Sanctuary” route with those…actually I think they did just not as polished. This is still a webseries which usually has a lower budget than tv so cut them some slack. You’ll probably like the real world stuff, but hate the fantasy stuff. Personally I hope this does well, we get season two focussing on Liu Kang and Kung Lao and the history of the tournament.
      Sent on the go.

Mortal Kombat is awesome so far! I just found a blog that’s giving out the preorder DLC for all the costumes, and the new Kenshi character DLC!

I just got my Reptile Klassic Kostume but I don’t know if there’s anymore keys left. If you want to check it out, here’s the site:
