He also wrote and co-directed the recent Mad Detective which has been getting great reviews (IIRC, To even called the movie WKF's picture). The movies they made around the turn of the century were by To's own admission done for money, which is understandable considering the state of the HK film industry. It's amazing that he's still loyal to the local film industry, really. And I'm very thankful for that. But you bring up a good point and I wonder if this movie will be another quick buck or a passion project. The Johnnie To that I admire and run out to see is the sole director of PTU, The Mission, and Election. The other Johnnie To, the co-director (Running on Karma, Full-Time Killer) I don't expect a whole lot from except superficial entertainment. More often than not, the substantive To is the sole director, while the co-director To is the commercial, superficial director. So when I heard To was solely directing this particular romance film, it was something of a surprise. Well it’s probably a matter of personal preference.
