The trades report that Timothy Olyphant has joined the cast of Zahler’s gritty Western “Bone Tomahawk”, and has signed on to play a character named John Brooder, described as “an eloquent sharpshooter who moved to the frontier in order to satisfy the dark impulses that lie beneath his polished exterior.”
I picture lots of fancy words while he’s mowing down people.
Olyphant, who is no stranger to Western wear and gunfights, joins a cast that already includes Kurt Russell, Peter Sarsgaard, Richard Jenkins, and Jennifer Carpenter.
The plot, based on Zahler’s original script, follows four men as they attempt to rescue a group of captives from “a band of cannibalistic troglodytes that live beyond the edge of civilization.” Wow. I don’t even know how to begin to picture what these guys look like, to be perfectly frank with you.
Production is set for Spring 2013 in New Mexico, which nowadays is standing in for just about anything you can think of, from a post-apocalyptic wasteland to Afghanistan to Westerns. I suppose it makes sense. Have you ever driven through New Mexico? Lots and lots of nothing there, folks…
Olyphant, meanwhile, is set to reprise his U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens in the fourth season of FX’s badass show “Justified”. You can check out an early promo for the new season here if you’re so inclined.
