I’m always down for a Western, especially a big-budget Hollywood Western with all the bells and whistles, but one that stars Natalie Portman? Gotta admit, I don’t think Western when I think Natalie Portman, but hey, maybe it’s time.
Portman is attached to star and produce the Western “Jane Got a Gun”, a packaged movie that is currently courting buyers over at Cannes. Besides Portman, the package comes with “We Need to Talk About Kevin” director Lynne Ramsay attached to helm.
Based on a script by Brian Duffield, “Jane Got a Gun” would find Portman playing Jane, a woman whose outlaw husband returns home shot to pieces and barely alive, forcing her to reluctantly “reach out to an ex-lover who she hasn’t seen in over ten years to help her defend her farm when the time comes that her husband’s gang eventually tracks him down to finish the job.” Hopefully the ex-lover is a gunslinger with can shoot.
Portman is coming off being preggers in real-life, and is currently starring in Terrence Malick’s “Lawless” (not to be confused with the John Hillcoat movie of the same name). She was also previously attached to produce “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”, but it appears that movie, like its subject matter, is pretty much dead. Or dead-ish, anyway.
The last time I can recall Natalie Portman holding a gun in a movie? I’m guessing it would have to be the “Star Wars” prequels, though she did wield a mean bow and arrow in “Your Highness”.
