Natalie Portman has joined the cast of Thor, and will be playing the role of Jane Foster, a mortal nurse who falls in love (and vice versa) with the God of Thunder in the comics. According to Marvel, the role will be “updated” for the film, so she’ll probably end up a tough as nails cop or crusading ACLU lawyer or something of equal grrrrl power, one presumes. Also, Marvel gave us a more detailed (or at least, more than we’ve seen so far) description of the plot. It goes something like this:

Marvel Studios expands its film universe with a new type of super hero: “Thor.” This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

Not exactly sure how that gels with the comic, since the last time I picked up a Thor comic, well, I don’t think I’ve actually ever picked up a Thor comic, so there you go. Didn’t they even turn the guy into a frog at one point? Yeah, wacky happenings over at Thor, not my cup of tea.

Portman will be joining Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Tom Hiddleston as the villainous Loki. Shakespeare guy Kenneth Branagh will be directing the big-screen movie for Marvel Studios. Mark your calenders for Summer 2011 to see the God of Thunder woo that chick from “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace”. One can only hope that Kenneth Branagh’s acting directions are, er, slightly better than that of George Lucas, cause the only thing more painful than watching Portman’s acting in the “Star Wars” prequels was, well, everyone else’s acting.

So if Portman is going to be playing the love interest of Thor, where does that leave the last rumor that had Jessica Biel playing Thor’s lady love? Since the movie will be taking place in both Asgard and on Earth, I suppose it’s possible to have two leading ladies, though that seems highly unlikely given Portman’s leading lady status.

Shooting starts early 2010.

Below: “Yay, listen well, woman, Thor would’th totally hit that.”

Thor becomes Dr.Donald Blake, not a cop and not a lawyer. He’s a little similar to what Dr.House is like on the T.V. series “House” walking cane and all. He must learn humulity as he does his work as a doctor where he meets Nurse Foster. This movie will be great but John Faveraue and Kenneth Branagh need to collaberate and cameo Donald Blake into Iron Man 2 it is imperative. Brian Blessed as “Odin”, Kenneth Branagh as “Fandrel”,Brendan Gleeson as “Volstagg”,Josh Brolin as “Hogun” and Jessica Biel as Lady Sif are all the other actors I want to see in this movie.

That’s a very good analogy. I do beleive though that he was saying that the girl will be made into a cop or lawyer, but just as you’ve stated, with Thor becoming Donald Blake, her being a nurse would fit better. Unless she’s a cop who he saves as Blake. ANYWAY I can’t wait for this. Better be good.

  • ulik says:

My bad, yeah he did say that. Revamping her persona as a cop or lawyer could work too but like you said her being a nurse would fit better especially after the great stories with shows like Grey’s Anatomy has had. This part of the film can keep the movie grounded to a degree with some realism and great drama . As far as cameos go again,I’m sure that Sam Jackson will cameo in the Donald Blake part of Thor but we need a surprise cameo in “Thor”. I would love to see “Hawkeye” or “Hank Pym” do a cameo to introduce them and start buzz for them. Hank Pym seems like a better candidate though. I hope that they can get Leonardo DiCaprio to sign up as Hank Pym!!! He would do an awsome job as Hank Pym similar to how he played in “The Aviator” but much more sarcastic and a bit of a jerk but still loved . He’d be the only one on par with Tony Stark and I’d love to see Robert Downey Jr. join forces with Leonardo DiCaprio, for the first time to my knowledge. Still hoping to see Hawkeye though. He should have been in Iron Man 2 also but who knows. The perfect actor to play as Hawkeye is Jason Statham!!! Hawkeye really is a stealth kinda guy, and that works perfectly for the kinds of weopons he uses. That being said, I’m sure they’ll go with the Ultimates Hawkeye version which would make a lot more sense. Jason Statham is very cocky just like Hawkeye. He embodies Hawkeye’s personality a lot!!! I can totally see Jason Statham punching Robert Downey Jr. in the face just to get his point across. as far as The Mandarin goes, there is one actor that I think is perfect.Although he is Japanese and not Chinese I think he can still pull it off easily not to mention he does speak Mandarin Chinese, that actor is HIROYUKI SANADA!!! Just look at him! & check out his resume. He fits The Mandarin like a glove and he’d be a very cool looking Mandarin at that. Most say Chow Yun Fat but I don’t think that Chow Yun Fat looks threatining at all and the Fu Man Chu style would be a disaster(from Pirates OTC). He could wear his ancient robes in some parts but I’d prefer to see Mandarin in a eastern/western style business suit.

The way that Thor can fit into “The Avengers” universe is through th exploration of multidimensions in the films explaing the possibilties and thoeries of it.(Too bad Reed Richards{Guy Pierce}can’t cameo in these movies)Still in all introducing Thor into The Avengers can work if done as he is portrayed somewhat in “The Ultimates”. He can be looked at as some crazy nut who has access to this incredible technology that they think is cloaked disallowing anybody to be able to figure out how it works, while he insists that its magic and that he is a god(arrogantly) but most refuse to believe him at first. Many people complain that Thor doesn’t fit into the “believable” world of Iron Man or The Avengers. Thats the whole point, he’s not suppose to just fit in!!! He’s an interdimensional being that due to the exposure or existing in his own dimension(Asgard);density, mass, gravity, etc.,all make him what he is. The magic part or sorcery can be explained through Metaphysics and Alchemy which are pseudosciences all their own but can’t be disproven to exist. So Thor can be done with no real problem as long as he’s done right

As the story say,Asgardians at one time were actually an ancient but normal human or mortal race that lived in Scandinavia that somehow stumbled upon an interdimensional vortex or were all transported to another dimension known as Asgard through a rift in time and space. Due to them being transported there safely,it can be explained that traveling through the energies of this vortex forever changed their DNA and made them what some would say “gods” or seemingly “immortal”. That is not far fetched and it could all be tied into something similar to “Stonehinge”. Whatever might have been happening at “Stonehinge” could have been taking place where the once mortal preAsgardians were. Many folkloric, cultural,or religious people throughout the world claim to communicate with extradimesional beings through shamanism, runes, and other means. Many of these beings are said to have once existed on earth but evolved or moved onto the next density or dimension but still are connected here with certain beings through shamanistic or magical rites. So you see, nothing is really far fetched with Thor or other inter/extradimensional beings. Modern science is exploring this subject and cannot prove it yet but does not deny it’s possible realtiy such as with parralel universes.

  • Dedpool378 says:

Umwhy can’t we just introduce him as having be approached by FUry at the end of Thor because he just saved the world from the invasion of Asgardian demons that Loki unleashes. That would have them working towards looking into interdimensional transportation and have Pym start by searching the sub atomic universe (the one he found recently in the comics). Caprio as Pym, eh, not so much, only cuase it would cost too much. I can’t think of anyone else off the top of my head except maybe Josh Lucas. As for Hawkeye, I like Statham but the accent is all wrong. And his attempts to hide it aren’t great. I’d say use Scott Adkins (Baraka Pool/Weapon XI) or maybe even Josh Duhamel or CHanning Tatum as Hawkeye. Just my thoughts. I like your grounded explanaition of the Asgardians as well. Supernatural AND sci-fi at the same time.

  • StarCarlton says:

I wish Portman was my nurse – let me show you where it hurts baby.

  • ulik says:

Hey Depool378 I get what your saying and that could actually work with Duhamel or Tatum as Marvel’s original Hawkeye but they seem a little too close to what people want as Captain America candidates and most of the “Marvel Productions”s movies seem like they will take on more of an “Ultimates” approach to some characters. As far as the accent goes, well the original Clint Barton was born in Iowa. Things can and have been changed in the comics and the movies. It would be more interesting to me that he was born in Iowa but raised in the slums of South London and returned to the states on a later date after inlisting in Shield. AntMan will be hard to push without an A-lister.

    • Dedpool378 says:

I agree about having an A-lister for Antman, but Leo is TOO expensive, with Robert Downey Jr, Sam Jackson, and Ed Notrton already on board, there’d be no money for effects. And I would choose Adkins for Hawkeye first because he’s good at stunts and looks the part, and has some decent acting ability. I still think Josh Lucas as Antman would be good. he’s underrated. As for Cap, since I’m hearing Channing Tatum is very mechanical, I’d go with Josh Duhamel.

  • ulik says:

What up? I’m back. Captain America and AntMan will be hard to sell with unknowns. AntMan/GiantMan is very unknown & not to many people like Antman or the idea of who he is and what he does. Captain America could sell or be successful with an unknown actor in the U.S. ONLY but over seas he will flop because many countries don’t like the U.S. especially if it has anything to do with American patriotism. That would Really make them say “America sucks, look they’re Captain America sucks too, haha!” I know many people from different countries and I have talked with them about movies and such. With a Cap’n America movie featuring an unknown actor they would be like “meh who is this guy,eh stupid American movie I won’t watch that” but if it featured Brad Pitt they would at least give it a chance because Brad Pitt is loved internationally. An unknown actor as Cap in The Avengers would have to kick Robert Downey’s ass in acting skills or he’ll be outshined and that would be extremely bad because Cap is suppose to inspire his teammates and they look up to him. I don’t see any unknown being able to do that. If they could find one it’d be great but I doubt it and it’d be a crazy risk. As far as expense, actors do take salary drops depending on many factors and even though Oceans 11,12, & 13 didn’t have cgi or many effects, they had a massive A-list of actors. It could be done it’s all about negotiations. Look, they almost lost Samuel L.Jackson and Mickey Rourke for Iron Man 2 but look what happened, they did the right thing and negotiated and that’s all they need to do, it can be done.

    • Deadpool3678 says:

Okay I have to disagree with you about the unknown as Cap thing. SUPERMAN is known worldwide and that doesn’t stop us from casting 3 unknonws in the aprt, Christopher Reeves, Tom Welling, and Brandon Routh). Hugh Jackman was an unknown before X-men, and now look at him He’s a good actor to boot. I can’t see anyone out acting RDJr., but doesn’t mean they can’t be really good either. I’m just scared we’re gonna add star power and looks but not acting talent and get a very wooden Cap. And you really can’t compare the Oceans movies to what Avengers would be. Like you said. they don’t have to contend with Salaries and SFX. Also looked what happened with them almost losing Sam because they were being cheap. Actors will take a cut but not a crazy one when they know the movie has potenitial to be a blockbuster. Adding three a-listers to a film is one thing but filling out a whole cast with them is gonna take sme serious negotiating skill. On par with Kevin Spacey and Sam Jackson (The Negotiator).

XD StarCarlton has the right idea in all of this
    Portman is a fox

As for the other conversation taking place it seems to me that their would need to be some intro to Thor in Iron Man 2. This is becuase Mr Stark. and “Mr.Blake”
WERE (emphasize the were) very close friends until the whole cloning of Thor, Thor getting pissed coming back and beating the living shit out of Iron Man etc etc. This movie however will obviously be taking place before the time of said occasions therefore they are indeed still very good friends. SOOOO knowing this i think that Thor ” Blake ” should have some mention in Iron Man 2

p.s. portman is still a fox

  • ulik says:

I can agree what was said about the unknowns that portrayed SuperMan but you have to remember that SuperMan has been a household name for about say….60 years? Any actor could have come on board and people would have gone to see it because he’s already popular. The same thing with BatMan. With Wolverine, he already had accumulated popularity with cartoons series that was out and his character seriously stands out from the rest because of his rogueish and gritty attitude while everybody else was clean cut. Captain America isn’t a household name and kinda comes off as corny and cheesy to most non-fans. So its a little more difficult to cast than say Wolverine who most people like because of his grittiness and different attitude in X-Men.It looks grim to me going with an unknown but I truly hope that whoever is chosen, whether its an unknown or A-lister, that he does the role justice, puts his all into it and makes Captain America a respected and household name. Much respect to you Deadpool3678 for not getting on the offensive and calling people names and stuff like a lot of bloggers ignorantly do. BTW did you or anybody you know go to Comic-Con?

    • Deadpool3678 says:

Nom prob Ulik, love the name by the way. The Asgardian Troll right? ANyway name calling is really immature. I understand what you’re saying but putting a big name does not necessarily mean good. Nic Cage in Ghost Rider (which I kinda liked). I’m just saying assigning a well known actor just for recognition isn’t the best way to go. It could very easily backfire (Clooney as Batman). And unfortunately no. No one I knew went to comic-con. I’m saving up to go to the NY one though.
