The truth is, the “Underworld” movies ceased to be horror when Kate Beckinsale showed up onscreen and shot it out with a couple of werewolves in the opening sequence of the first movie. The whole franchise is less a horror franchise than it is an action one, and this latest installment would seem to bear that out. When the idea of werewolves battling vampires gives you flashes of “Spartacus”, there’s no scare to be had, folks. Anyways, a few days ago I complained that the producers of the latest “Underworld” sequel, “Rise of the Lycans” seem to have no idea about the people watching their movie, having slapped a wrinkled looking Bill Nighy on the first official poster for their movie instead of, you know, that young hot thing named Rhona Mitra who is starring in the film. They haven’t put out a Rhona-centric poster yet, but here are some new pics from the movie anyway.
The prequel story traces the origins of the centuries-old blood feud between the aristocratic vampires known as Death Dealers and their onetime slaves, the Lycans. In the Dark Ages, a young Lycan named Lucian (Sheen) emerges as a powerful leader who rallies the werewolves to rise up against Viktor (Nighy), the cruel vampire king who has enslaved them. Lucian is joined by his secret lover, Sonja (Mitra), in his battle against the Death Dealer army and his struggle for Lycan freedom.
Starring Rhona Mitra, Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy, Shane Brolly, Steven Mackintosh, Craig Parker, Kevin Grevioux, Tania Nolan, and directed by Patrick Tatopoulos.
Rhona Mitra tries to get a rise out of us in 2009.
