It’s been said before and it deserves saying again: if you had no idea “Battleship” wasn’t a “Transformers” movie, you would think it was absolutely another “Transformers” movie from all the trailers. This third trailer certainly doesn’t try to change that perception at all. What you get between all the cool CG shots of weapons being discharged and attacking alien ships are some cardboard looking human people running around. But make no mistake about it — it’s all about the CG battles here, kids, and from the looks of it, there are a lot of those to be found.
Director Peter Berg took the directing gig so he could get Universal to fund his more, ahem, down-to-Earth “Lone Survivor” movie, and it sure looks like he gave the studio exactly what they wanted — a big-budget sci-fi action spectacular in the vein of Michael Bay’s “Transformers” movies. It’s saying something, isn’t it, that Berg can do films like “Friday Night Lights” and “The Kingdom” and at the same time toss out a “Battleship” or “Hancock” whenever he feels like it, but Bay would never be able to do the reverse? I guess sometimes you just gotta know your limitations.
Anyways, the plot of “Battleship”? “Transformer”-y aliens invade Earth. We fight back with battleships. Da end.
