I’ll give them this: whoever cut this new minute long TV spot for Gary Ross’ “The Hunger Games” sure knows what they’re doing. It’s an excellent pitch that tugs at the heartstrings, featuring no action whatsoever, just Jennifer Lawrence’s heroine being pulled away from her family, all laid under a track by Taylor Swift. I didn’t even know it was Swift until I looked it up. Silly me, I thought she only sang silly pop songs about boys and you know, all those other teenage girl nonsense. Oh well, live and learn. Check out the latest extended TV spot for “The Hunger Games” and try not to get too choked up. And oh yeah, that quick scene of Josh Hutcherson’s character throwing away bread to some pigs? That’s really, really important.
So what’s all the hubbub about? Based on a trilogy of young adult novels by Suzanne Collins, “The Hunger Games” is set in a dystopian future where every year the ruling class selects two teenagers from the surrounding (and poor) 12 districts to participate in a win-or-die tournament. A “battle royale”, if you will. Lawrence’s character, Katniss Everdeen, volunteers for the games after her little sister is chosen. Luckily for our gal, she’s pretty darn handy with a bow and arrow. Unluckily for her, her opponents are pretty darn imposing.
Co-starring Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Lenny Kravitz, Wes Bentley, Toby Jones, Amandla Stenberg, Alexander Ludwig, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jacqueline Emerson, Paula Malcomson, Dayo Okeniyi, Jack Quaid, Leven Rambin, Willow Shields, and directed by Ross.
Win or die March 23, 2012.
