I don’t care how many movies about or featuring Ip Man have been made, until Wong Kar Wai does it, it’s still unexplored to me. Kar Wai is not new to martial arts, of course, he cut his teeth on swordplay flicks with “Ashes of Time” before he moved on to more contemporary efforts. With “The Grandmasters”, though, he’s going back to his martial arts roots, and I couldn’t be more excited.
The latest news on Kar Wai’s still-in-production movie (no surprise, Kar Wai works slooooooooooow) comes from Berlin, where the film’s North American rights are up for sale. THR has Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Productions in the process of beating out some heavy hitters for those rights, including The Weinstein Company, Fox Searchlight, Sony Pictures Classics and Focus Features. As someone who has been burned many, many times by the Weinstein’s handling of Asian movies, I beg you, please, PLEASE, don’t let them have “The Grandmasters”.
The film stars Tony Leung, Zhang Ziyi and Chang Chen, with action choreography by the great Yeun Woo-ping.
