Holy, this thing looks bloody as hell, and besides the triumvirate of mega Asian movie stars, that’s apparently what the producers of “The Warlords” are selling — the bodycount. Then again, if you have Jet Li, Andy Lau, and Takeshi Kaneshiro hacking their way through half of China, similar to the Wild Bunch’s last excursion into Mexico (minus the machine guns, of course), why wouldn’t you focus on it? That seems to be where these new batch of posters and images from “The Warlords” are doing. The only thing I’m worried about with “The Warlords” is that the story itself isn’t up to snuff. From everything I’ve seen, from the trailers to the images, the focus seems to be on the fight, fight, fight.
It’s a heroic tale of three blood brothers and their struggle in the midst of war and political upheaval. It is based on “The Assassination of Ma,” a Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) story about the killing of general Ma Xinyi. The story was filmed by Zhang Che in 1973 as The Blood Brothers.
Starring Jet Li, Andy Lau, and Takeshi Kaneshiro, and directed by Peter Chan.
The Warlords invade December 13th, 2007.
