Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring

Sometimes it feels like I’ve been reviewing different versions of Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy at least once per year. (By the way, will we now have to start calling these the “Original Lord of the Rings” trilogy from now on, what with Jackson already at work on three more films in the series?) I thought these three newly released Extended Edition Blu-rays of the three films might be yet new versions (there have been DVDs, Blu-rays, theatrical versions, extended versions, etc.), but they’re actually re-releases of the same three editions found in the previously released “The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy” box set, which came out last year. You can read our full review of that box set here.

Now, instead of having to buy the entire trilogy in one set, you have the option of purchasing them individually. If, you know, you’re one of those weird people who likes one or two of the movies, but don’t care for one or two others. I have yet to meet such a person myself, but then again, I rarely leave my house for fear of bats, so there you go.

So what do we have here? Let’s see, shall we?

LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS
(BUY IT ON BLU-RAY)

In this first part of the Trilogy, the young hobbit Frodo Baggins inherits a ring; but this ring is no mere trinket. It is the One Ring, an instrument of absolute power that could allow Sauron, the dark Lord of Mordor, to rule Middle-earth and enslave its peoples. Frodo, together with a Fellowship that includes his loyal hobbit friends, humans, a wizard, a dwarf and an elf, must take the One Ring across Middle-earth to Mount Doom, where it first was forged, and destroy it forever. Such a journey means venturing deep into territory manned by Sauron, where he is amassing his army of Orcs. And it is not only external evils that the Fellowship must combat, but also internal dissension and the corrupting influence of the One Ring itself. The course of future history is entwined with the fate of the Fellowship. The film won four Oscars® for Best Visual Effects, Cinematography, Makeup and Original Score.

Now, this is one of those times that I wished I had a BluRay player. Such a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings. Too bad it had to end.
