To fully explore the undersea world of exotic locales like New Guinea, Indonesia, and the Great Barrier Reef, you could put on scuba gear and hop into the water. Or for the next closest thing, there’s “IMAX Under the Sea”, which besides keeping you dry, also comes with voiceover work by funnyman Jim Carrey, here dispensing with the yuk-yuks as our narrator and guide. Written and directed by IMAX veteran Howard Hall, the IMAX 3D shot “Under the Sea” is now available (as of 3/10) from IMAX and Warner Home Videos on DVD and Blu-ray.
Imagine a world of incredible color and beauty. Of crabs wearing jellyfish for hats. Of fish disguised as frogs, stones and shag carpets. Of a kaleidoscope of underwater life. Now, go explore it! The makers of Deep Sea and Into the Deep take you into tropical waters alive with adventure: the Great Barrier Reef and other South Pacific realms. Narrated by Jim Carrey and featuring astonishing camerawork, this amazing film brings you face to fin with Nature?s marvels, from the terrible grandeur (and terrible teeth) of a Great White to the comic antics of a lovestruck cuttlefish.
Our copy of the Blu-ray comes with barebones special features, but for film nerds, it does have a very interesting (albeit too short) behind-the-scenes feature about the challenges of shooting with IMAX 3D cameras underwater. The thing you come away with is just how massive those IMAX 3D cameras are (above), and how the filmmakers are basically lugging around 4 tons of equipment for every location, which makes all the things they’re able to capture for the film all the more extraordinary. The rest of the features chronicle the crew as they shoot in the film’s five different locations.
