Guy Ritchie struck gold with “Sherlock Holmes”, his “re-imagining” of the classic British Detective now available on Blu-ray, DVD and for download from Warner Home Video March 30, 2010. The film stars Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as his more than capable sidekick, Watson.
The first movie (a sequel is already in the works for next year) pits Holmes and Watson against Lord Blackwood (the always sinister looking Mark Strong), where it seems like Holmes’ prodigious deduction powers may have finally met their match in Blackwood’s use of magic and occult dabbling. Of course, all is not what they seem, and when Rachel Adams as the seductive Irene Adler gets involved, things get more bumpy for our heroes. Meanwhile, Holmes’s would-be nemesis Moriarty lurks in the background pulling the strings. A fun, clever, if oftentimes too pat movie (man, Holmes is one smart dude!), “Sherlock Holmes” is the kind of film you can’t help but get a kick out of.
The game is afoot – and astounding! Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law put memorable imprints on the roles of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in a bold reimagining that makes the famed sleuth a daring man of action as well as a peerless man of intellect. Guy Ritchie directs this dazzling adventure.
The DVD comes with your usual behind-the-scenes goodies with talking head interviews, including a pretty nifty feature where director Guy Ritchie walks you through the film. You also get a digital copy of “Sherlock Holmes” to put on your traveling movie device of choice. And for those wondering how Downey Jr. mastered his British accent, there’s a nice little feature on that, too. I always found these type of things interesting, but maybe that’s just me. DVD picture and sound quality is fine, though the visuals do sometimes look a bit too drab, but I’m attributing that more to the film’s gray cobblestone-dominated streets and old buildings than video transfer.
