“Young Justice: Invasion” is the subtitled second season of the show, that picks up exactly where the first season ended. Well at least at first it does. Where the last season ended with the episode “Auld Acquaintance” the new season picks up with the episode “Happy New Year,” and starts by addressing the major questions left behind last season. But it quickly jumps ahead 5 years, reintroducing old characters Robin (now Nightwing), Superboy, and Miss Martian, while introducing new team members Robin (Tim Drake), Beast Boy, Bumble Bee, Wonder girl, Batgirl and more.
What this season does, much like last season is set up an overarching plot, and throughout the season we learn a bit more about it, this time it’s an alien invasion. It seems that the villainous organization known as “The Light” consisting of baddies Vandal Savage, Lex Luthor, Klarion the Witch Boy, Ocean Master, The Brain, and Queen Bee have made an alien alliance, briefly hinted at in season one, but is now beginning to come to fruition. As the heroes, both the Justice League and the Team (never referred to as Young Justice) investigate what happened with a group of heroes during their disappearance last season, the villains are putting their plans into action.
The episode “Earthlings” deals directly with the missing heroes but also begins to expose the new threat. “Alienated” deals with missing team member Aqualad, and the episode “Salvage” brings us up to date on the other missing members Kid Flash and Artemis, as well as ally Red Arrow, now searching for the original Speedy. The fun continues with “Beneath” which is a female centric episode that kicks much butt, and “Bloodlines” features the first animated appearance of the full Flash Family!! To tell anymore would truly ruin the fun of the season. But the episodes titled “Depths,” “Satisfaction,” “Darkest” and “Before the Dawn” are all aptly named just like all the rest and you won’t be disappointed.
There is a lot going on, there is intrigue, deception, and great action and storytelling. I really can’t say enough about the show. It has something for everyone. My friend Virg and I both love it and can watch it with our kids. I have a 7 year old and he has teens. He likes it because the teens can appreciate what the characters are going through as every teen has that time in their life trying to live up to the expectations of their parents and teachers and such, while trying to forge their own paths, in this case living up to the legacies of their mentors while being their own heroes. And I like it because even though there are some complex issues going on, younger viewers can really get into it because the action is good, it’s entertaining and fun, and the stories are well told.
Warner Bros. definitely heard fan outcry about their first season releases, as they have wisely followed suit from the end of the first season by packaging the first half of the season in one release. Even better, 3 bonus cartoons are included from “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” that pertain to “Young Justice: Invasion”. This is a really well done show that takes the maturity of the “Justice League” but follows versions of some of the young heroes featured in “Teen Titans.” The massive who’s who of characters that appear on the show is impressive, and the nods to past shows and the comics will make any comic fanboy happy.
Bottom Line, if you haven’t gotten on board with this show yet, go get Season one and catch up so you can be a part of Invasion!!!
