Oh, dancing CG penguins. What can’t they do? Play the drums, for one. But they can certainly dance. And sing. God knows where they learned all those songs from. What, did they just make them up or something? If so, then these are certainly some very creative penguins. (Not to mention songwriters!) I’m just being facetious, of course. Movies about dancing penguins defy logic, and thus, real-world sense. Having said that, get a second helping of some musical ice-based shenanigans when George Miller’s “Happy Feet II” waddles their way to DVD and Blu-ray this March 13, 2012 courtesy of Warner Bros. Home Video.

The sequel to “Happy Feet”, the Academy Award®-winning animated smash hit, “Happy Feet Two” returns audiences to the magnificent landscape of Antarctica in Superb 3D. Mumble, The Master of Tap, has a problem because his tiny son, Erik, is choreo-phobic. Reluctant to dance, Erik runs away and encounters The Mighty Sven – a penguin who can fly! Mumble has no hope of competing with this charismatic new role model. But things get worse when the world is shaken by powerful forces. Erik learns of his father’s “guts and grit” as Mumble brings together the penguin nations and all manner of fabulous creatures – from tiny Krill to giant Elephant Seals – to put things right.

“Happy Feet II”, as you may have surmised, is the belated sequel to Miller’s 2006 movie “Happy Feet”. That film was a surprised hit, scoring a whopping $380 million from a $100 million dollar budget. The sequel, by comparison, didn’t fare quite as well, only managing $150 million in worldwide box office from an (estimated) $135 million dollar budget. The CG sequel managed a rarity in today’s Hollywood: it actually did worse than the original. For a children’s CG movie, this almost never happens.

Elijah Wood returns as Mumble, the hero of the first movie. Mumble is now all grown up and married to his sweetheart Gloria (Pink, replacing the late Brittany Murphy). The couple have a son, Erik, who like his father before him, doesn’t quite fit in to the whole dancing and singing penguin stuff. Instead, Erik dreams of flying, and soon falls in with a group of penguins led by “The Simpsons’” Hank Azaria. The gang must all band together though when Gloria and other penguins become trapped after a glacier shift. Meanwhile, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon lend their famous voices to a couple of krill, while an all-star cast of Sofía Vergara, Robin Williams, Common, and Hugo Weaving all lend a mixture of oddball accents to the freezing tale. Who knew penguins were so, er, ethnically diverse?

Upon a second look, it was probably inevitable that the sequel would fall short of the original. Five years after the first movie came out of nowhere and charmed audiences, the sequel just feels, well, dated. By the time “Happy Feet 2″ hit screens in 2011, CG penguins already felt tired and well-worn, not help by a story that’s highly derivative of the first movie. When it comes to CG entertainment, where anything is possible and your imagination unlimited since you can just draw it, the lack of ambition here is a bit discouraging, though I found the two krill to be somewhat entertaining, if entirely pointless meandering on the filmmaker’s part. Strangely, I kind of appreciated that. Check them out in the clip below:

I have no doubt kids will still dig it, though if you liked the first movie, you may come out of part two feeling like you just saw a pale imitation.

I think this should have come with an exclusive sneak peak at the next Mad Max movies. Would’ve opened up a whole new consumer audience.

I’ll get it for my daughter as she loved the first one (I did too), but i didn’t think it’d be anything special.
