I have a giant soft spot in my heart for the “Resident Evil” franchise. I won’t argue that they’re great cinema, or even great horror or sci-fi, hell, I won’t even claim most of them are very good. Still, like a dutiful little fan, I trek to the theater every couple of years, plunk down my hard earned money, and thoroughly enjoy myself for 90-minutes. In realistic terms you could have star Milla Jovovich onscreen reading the newspaper and most of us would sit through it, but you add guns and monster fights, and I’m down ‘til I’m underground.
Hot on the heels of the first teaser trailer, Screen Gems has released some new artwork for “Resident Evil: Retribution”, the fifth installment in the videogame-based series. Did anyone really think they would be able to milk five movies out of this? Especially five movies that get theatrical releases and do reasonably well at the box office? Good for them.
Here’s the official synopsis:
The wildly successful film franchise adaptation that has grossed nearly $700 million worldwide to the popular video game series, “Resident Evil,” returns in its highly anticipated fifth installment, “Re5ident Evil: Retribution” in state-of-the art 3D.
The Umbrella Corporation’s deadly T-virus continues to ravage the Earth, transforming the global population into legions of the flesh eating Undead. The human race’s last and only hope, Alice (Milla Jovovich), awakens in the heart of Umbrella’s most clandestine operations facility and unveils more of her mysterious past as she delves further into the complex. Without a safe haven, Alice continues to hunt those responsible for the outbreak; a chase that takes her from Tokyo to New York, Washington, D.C. and Moscow, culminating in a mind-blowing revelation that will force her to rethink everything that she once thought to be true. Aided by newfound allies and familiar friends, Alice must fight to survive long enough to escape a hostile world on the brink of oblivion. The countdown has begun.
“Resident Evil: Retribution” reunites Alice with some recognizable faces for fans of the cycle, like Michelle Rodriguez, Sienna Guillory, Oded Fehr, Shawn Roberts, and Boris Kodjoe, and throws in some newcomers, like Bingbing Li and Kevin Durand. Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, “Resident Evil: Retribution” opens September 14, 2012.
