Ever wondered where Janet Van Dyne, aka The Wasp, would have fit into Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers” had he not cut her out of the final script? It turns out she would have been a pretty prominent member of the group, even showing up when the heroes gather in Downtown New York to battle Loki and his invading alien hordes.
Check out some new animatics (aka storyboards in animated form) that show where the Wasp was, at one point, supposed to fit into the the movie. Apparently there was a version of the script where the Wasp took part in the Battle of New York, standing (or, well, floating) amongst Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, et al.
Whedon has previously said that he always wanted the Wasp in the movie, but could just never figure out a way to squeeze her in there. Looking back, it was probably a good idea to skip the Wasp and Hank Pym (who will be getting his own movie soon enough, in Edgar Wright’s “Ant-Man” — and who knows, maybe the Wasp will show up there), given how many superheroes were already in the movie.
But hey, it’s always fun to see what almost was:
Here’s the storyboard screenshot in case you missed it (it actually took me two looks to spot it):
