Tom Cruise saves us from Melissa Leo (sporting some kind of heavy, stab-yourself-in-the-ears Southern accent) and deadly flying mechanical drones with laser weaponry in Joseph Kosinski’s “Oblivion”. Along the way, he falls for Olga Kurylenko. Or at least, that’s what I gather from everything I’ve seen of the movie so far, including this new trailer below. I’m sure there’s more to it than that, because 2 hours of Tom Cruise battling drones might get a tad repetitive after a while.

Also, check out two new posters from “Oblivion” above (click to enlarge). The one with Tom Cruise walking along the remains of an old bridge is so ’80s. I wonder if that was the point? Probably not. This doesn’t strike me as a film that has tongue firmly in cheek.

On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind. Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete. Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

“Oblivion” also stars Morgan Freeman, Andrea Riseborough, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

Saving what’s left of the world this April 19, 2013.

Is it me or does it seem like cruise is getting better in his acting as he ages?

I’ve always thought he was a good actor, but maybe it’s just more obvious now because he’s no longer the “young buck with good looks” that he used to be.
