If we’re being honest here for a moment, I’m not the biggest fan of the worldwide phenomenon that is “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”. In fact, I disliked Steig Larsson’s books and the original Swedish movies immensely. I think they’re overblown, and frankly, a little bit boring. Despite my misgivings, I still feel like there’s a decent movie in there somewhere. There are elements that, if you trim the fat around them, should be able to come together into a solid mystery/thriller. If anyone can pull this off, it is probably director David Fincher, who has a knack for making interesting films that still maintain pop appeal.
So, though I approach Fincher’s upcoming “Dragon Tattoo” remake with some trepidation, I still have hope that it will be good. Maybe he can distill it down and make something that doesn’t suck. The promo material has all been handled well, and now there is a new minute-long TV spot. It doesn’t tell you anything that you don’t already know—they’re looking for a long-lost murderer; Lisbeth Salander, the heroine, is different in every way; there are motorcycles, car chases, and all manner of fun-time adventures. What it does is continue to set the mood and tone, which are vital pieces if this reworking is going to be successful. After seeing this I’m still on the fence, though leaning towards the cautiously optimistic side of things.
“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” stars Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig, Stellen Skarsgard, Robin Wright, Christopher Plummer, Goran Visnjic, and Julian Sands. Directed by David Fincher, it opens in theaters December 21, and promises to be the “feel bad movie” of this impending holiday season.
