Last year Steven Soderbergh and Channing Tatum struck gold with their male stripper drama “Magic Mike”, and hit a lesser vein—silver, maybe copper—with “Haywire”. Now they’re back together again and taking on the psychological drug market with the thriller “Side Effects”. A new UK trailer gives you a closer look at the pharmacology-enhanced story of a love triangle between Tatum, Jude Law, and Rooney Mara.
Here’s the official synopsis:
“Side Effects” is a provocative thriller about Emily and Martin (Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum), a successful New York couple whose world unravels when a new drug prescribed by Emily’s psychiatrist (Jude Law)—intended to treat anxiety—has unexpected side effects.
Full of new footage, this trailer pushes the drug side of the story to the periphery, focusing instead on the darker elements of the plot. One concern here, however, does this give away too much? Rumor has it that the narrative bounces around in a nonlinear fashion, so maybe Soderbergh has some tricks up his sleeve, but it seems that the trailer gives away most of the story. We’ll just have to wait and see. I’m on board either way.
“Side Effects” marks the third collaboration between Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns (“Contagion”), and opens in the US on February 8. According to all of the talk, “Side Effects” will also be Soderbergh’s final film. Again, we’ll have to wait and see.
