If you haven’t seen Andres Muschietti’s 2008 short film “Mama”, I suggest, uh, watching it? It’s pretty freaky, that’s for sure. I still get goose bumps just thinking about it (see the original short below). Apparently lots of people were effected by the short, because Muschietti has gotten financing to expand it into a full-length feature film — and with a couple of Hollywood stars in the lead to boot.
THR reports that Muschietti will direct the feature film (from a rewrite by Neil Cross — Muschiette wrote the original with his sister Barbara Muschietti) with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (“Games of Throne”) and the suddenly everywhere Jessica Chastain in the lead.
The plot of the feature, as you might imagine, expands quite a bit on the short:
The movie tells the story of a couple – Chastain and Coster-Waldau – who take in their long-lost young nieces and nephews. The kids were found after living in the forest for five years but now murderous events begin to unfold and it becomes clear that a supernatural force is intent on claiming the kids.
The film begins shooting October 3 in Toronto.
And here’s the creepy short by Muschietti (don’t blame me if you get nightmares):
