“Grand Theft Auto” is quite possibly one of the most addictive games I’ve ever played, and I’ve played a lot of games in my time. The sheer expansiveness of the game is just brilliant stuff, and makes playing it endless. The “city” that the games are set in are designed in such a way that you could play, literally, for days and weeks and months and never have to stop — unless the cops shoot you dead, that is. So what about a movie based on the GTA games? Don’t count on it, apparently is the word.
Here’s the word about a possible movie based on the games from Rockstar Games themselves, responding to rumors that an announcement was set to be made about a movie version of the game:
“Rockstar was not involved in this project in any shape or form nor is it something that we’re currently interested in. There was no GTA movie in the works as far as Rockstar is concerned. Some movie producers were trying to put something together to entice us to make a movie, as studios and production teams frequently have done in the past. This proposal was no more interesting than the numerous others we receive. We never entertained proceeding with the project.”
Oh well. As an uber fan of the game, I don’t know if the movie would work anyway; this is one of those things that was designed to be played, to interact with, not sit in a dark theater and watch on a big screen. It just betrays the game’s entire point for being. But hey, if they did end up making a movie from it, I would probably see it anyway, if just out of a love for the games.
