With Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” tracking to open huge, it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. has already begun work on the sequel. In fact, the trades are reporting that the studio has “fast-tracked” part 2.
Snyder is expected to return to the director’s chair, with David Goyer once again on scripting duties. The big question here is the role producer Christopher Nolan will play in the sequel. Nolan got co-story credit on “Man of Steel” and famously played a “godfathering” role on the Snyder movie.
Of course, Nolan is plenty busy these days, with his sci-fi epic “Interstellar” set to go into production for a 2014 release. That doesn’t leave him with a lot of time to be godfathering “Man of Steel 2”, at least not with as much attention as he is said to have given the first movie.
It’s also unclear how exactly this will impact Warner’s plans for a “Justice League” movie, which the studio had optimistically set for 2015. I get the feeling that movie is going to get delayed a tad, since I can’t see “Man of Steel 2” arriving any earlier than 2015. Of course, it would be quite something if Warner decides to throw fanboys a one-two punch with “Man of Steel 2” AND “Justice League” in 2015, alongside Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers 2”.
But really, that’s asking for a bit much, don’t you think?
Until then, catch “Man of Steel” when it super punches its way into theaters this Friday. I’m guessing a lot of you will be there on midnight Thursday.
