We know David O. Russell of “Three Kings” fame (and the upcoming “The Fighter”) will be writing and directing a big-screen adaptation of the PS3 videogame “Uncharted”, but we don’t know who is going to be playing Nathan Drake, the hero of the games, for him. Well now we do. In an interview with MTV while out promoting his “The Fighter”, the film’s star Mark Wahlberg sort of spilled the beans. HE will be Nathan Drake, and will once again be re-teaming with Russell for their third movie together.
Wahlberg tells MTV:
The idea that he has is just insane. So hopefully we’ll be making that movie this summer.
He also adds about some potential casting, namely re-teaming “Goodfellas” Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro:
That’s who he wants to write the parts for. I talked to Pesci about it and I know David’s people have talked to [Robert De Niro]. I’m obviously in whatever David wants to do but the idea of it is so off the charts: De Niro being my father, Pesci being my uncle. It’s not going to be the watered-down version, that’s for sure.
According to MTV, this apparently means Russell’s script won’t be entirely loyal to the storylines of the two games, because Drake’s family never makes an appearance in either title. Which is probably just as well. As bestselling as the games are, most people have never even heard of it.
I like the idea of Wahlberg as Drake. He’s always much better when he’s allowed to punch and shoot his way onscreen. He’s got the type of swagger that makes those roles natural to him.
