Official: Anne Hathaway is Selina Kyle (Catwoman) and Tom Hardy is Bane in The Dark Knight Rises

After a lot of debate and rumors and speculation, Warner Bros. has saved us all the trouble and made it official: Anne Hathaway has beaten out all of Hollywood’s starlets to play Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s third Batman film, “The Dark Knight Rises”. She will be the third actress to tackle the role on the big screen, following in the footsteps of Michelle Pfeiffer in “Batman Returns” and Halle Berry in the ill-conceived “Catwoman” movie.

Meanwhile, Tom Hardy will play the muscle to Hathaway’s guile, stepping into the mask of Bane, the man who, in the comic books, literally “broke” Batman. Bane last appeared on the big screen in Joel Schumacher’s ridiculous 1997 Batman film “Batman & Robin”, but let’s all just pretend that never happened, shall we?

Official press release ahoy:

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”

In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”

Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven.

Looks like it’s time to get back into “Bronson” shape, Tom Hardy!

Batman rises again July 20, 2012.

I’m excited to see that Catwoman/Selena Kyle is going to be in “The Dark Knight Rises”. I think I would have been disappointed if Nolan left the franchise and we never got his take on her.

Meh. As much as I love Catwoman, Talia woulda been a better way to go, as we get love interest/villain/and connection to first film. But ah well. Hardy as bane I can see to a point, but it now changes the ethnicity of Bane (who has always been Sout American). it makes me wonder if they’re going to use Hardy’s accent to give him the air of intelligence that isn’t seen when you look at Bane. Bane is very smart, a good tactician and on top of that in peak human condition, then add the venom to that and wow. Played right this could really work. Bane would use Batman’s obivous confussion over Catwoman to his advantage. Was really hoping for Hugo Strange though.

I’m all for Hugo Strange in Batman seeing as he is the original Batman super-villain. Bane is what really bothers me, why? we don’t need him. Talia and Selina with Hugo pulling the strings would have been a better movie. Dedpool you really can’t be happy about Bane it just reminds people of Joel Schumacher.

@Dedpool, I don’t really care for Catwoman either. But I have a good feeling that Talia is still in this like I said before. The Dark Knight is going to need some help. He’s got the cops, Bane Catwoman and whoever else that’s hes’ gotta deal with. I’m 70% sure Talia is in it although there will be an inevitable fight between Batman and Talia first before she’d help.

Oh and Nix, put the Bronson pic up. That lil pic of Hardy doesn’t do him justice. The fanboys will flip out wiht “he’s too small” talk. LOL.

I am severely disapointed. Anne Hathaway, really?!??! Out of the list of actresses on tap they went with Anne Hathaway?!?!?! I was all set for Hardy to play Dr. Hugo Strange. That scenario would have fit well with the end of TDK and the Nolanverse better than Bane in my opinion. Catwoman eh. I like her and all but I’d rather see a villain or vilainess that hasn’t been done on film yet. Talia Al Ghul was my first pick. Even having a second tier female like Chase Meridian, Harley Quinn or Poison Ivy. Either way Nolan will deliver.

Agreed. This is the first time I was actually against the casting in one of these films, but I’ll see what comes of it. I’m interested to see what Nolan does with Bane. Catwoman not so much, as there isn’t much you can do with her that hasn’t been done in comics, or animated shows.

I scoffed at the thought of Ledger as the Joker when I first heard that news too. Lol. Maybe Hathaway will turn it up a notch! She has been in some pretty dark fare like Havok and Rachel getting Married. I hope that they have Selina as the hooker/catburglar from year one. All of a sudden I’m very nervous. I was set on Strange and Talia. Hardy is a great actor and I’m sure that with Nolan behind the wheel it’ll turn out cool. I just need some time to reevaluate my stance on this film now.

Man, Hathaway is going to make me actually want to see a Nolan movie for once! Awesome!

i really wanted angelina as catwoman

So I was thinking what if Nolan plays Bane something along the lines of Kraven the Hunter, except Bane is a criminal mastermind who only likes to get his hands dirty with worthy advesaries, and he has just found one in Batman, hence he has journeyed to Gotham to take over the criminal underwolrd that is falling apart thanks to this “Urban Myth”

    • Spoogeonherass

I think you are confusing Kraven and Bane too much. Bane was forced to live out his father’s sentence in Santa Prisca prison because I guess people are assholes in South America. He was placed in a “hole” which obviously would make a person paranoid and frightened where he heard stories of the “bat”. Then he heard of Batman in Gotham and made the connection.

      • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

Not confusing them at all. I was speculating on what could be. And what happened in the comics is usually only a starting place for the movie or cartoon versions so I think this Bane is going to be different than any version so far.

Lame. We can’t have the Penguin because he’s supposedly ‘not realistic enough,’ but we can have Bane? And Catwoman? Should be Penguin and Riddler.

    • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

Your reasoning confuses me. What isn’t realistic about Bane (Other than his size which can easily be said to be artist interpretation) and a catburglar? Sure it’s kinda silly she dresses like a cat, but Batman dresses as a Bat. I think when they said Penguin wasn’t realistic enough they meant the campy version from the 60′s and the deformed version from “Returns.” Regardless, why rehash more old villains that already got a chance to front movies. Yeah we got the Joker again, but that’s because he’s Bat’s most ICONIC villain. But I’m personally disappointed we didn’t get Hugo Strange and Thalia, as that would’ve been right up Nolan’s alley. Ah well.

      • Anonymous

thank you. Not feeling the Penguin and The Riddler either. But I do agree that finishing with Batman’s original villain Hugo Strange would be nice. Selina would work because in year one she was inspired by Batman. And Talia would come in with the League of Assassins to avenge her father and control the Gotham underworld. Pitting Batman against a psychological threat with the added pressure of a love stricken vengeful daughter. Cat-woman/Selina Kyle would have the added depth to help Bruce/Batman overcome his loss from the second movie. Ala Hush.

        • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

That’d work. I also wouldn’t have minded Bane and Thalia. Thalia originally coming to Gotham for revenge, with Bane as her muscle and lead Assassn for the League of Shadows (as it was called in the film). She’d use her socilite status (which is a cover) to get in close with Bruce to study him. She’d send Bane and some assassins after Batman. After a confrontation with the assassins and bane, bane gets the upper hand over an exhausted Batman, and breaks his back. Bruce decides that he’s done with being Batman and wants to settle down with Thalia. After some time helping with Bruce’s recovery she begins falling for him, though she was supposed to just be faking it to marry Bruce and take his fortune as her own and add it to the Leagues funding. Meanwhile Bane sees this and is disappointed in her, and notices her resolve starting to fail. He usurps control of the League and orders Thalia killed. Bruce, now recovered, attempts to save her, but she allows herself to be killed to atone for herself and her father and tells him the truth. Batman defeats the assassins and then has to go toe to toe with Bane again. Batman defeats Bane, cementing himself as the most feared indivdual in Gotham and as it’s protector.

      • Spoogeonherass

Hugo Strange is not even close to mainstream. There is no way in my mind that I can fathom how you could have possibly thought he was going to be in this movie.

        • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

Ra’s Al Ghul isn’t exactly mainstream either and he was in “Begins.” Mainstream doesn’t mean anything with Nolan at the helm.

The Penguin Story Line was as horrible in the comic books as it was in Batman returns…, I’m glad they aren’t using him .. bane is a better character, cat woman was ok
