It’s not Jon Hamm, or Jeffrey Dean Morgan, or the 50 other actors that 50 other sites have claimed unnamed sources as telling them has either landed, is being considered, or is director Zack Snyder’s top choice to play Batman in Warner Bros.’ upcoming (and as yet, still untitled) Superman/Batman team-up movie.

It’s Ben Affleck.

Ben AffleckThe award-winning star and director of “Argo”, “The Town”, and the man who previously played a Marvel superhero, will be suiting up in the cape and cowl as a grizzled, veteran Batman in Snyder’s upcoming “Man of Steel” follow-up. Warner Bros. made the official announcement themselves via a press release, which, let’s face it, must be some kind of a first. Usually a fansite or one of the trades will break the news first.

Ending weeks of speculation, Ben Affleck has been set to star as Batman, a.k.a. Bruce Wayne. Affleck and filmmaker Zack Snyder will create an entirely new incarnation of the character in Snyder’s as-yet-untitled project—bringing Batman and Superman together for the first time on the big screen and continuing the director’s vision of their universe, which he established in “Man of Steel.” The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Henry Cavill will return as Superman, along with “Man of Steel’s” Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.

The idea is for Snyder, along with writer David Goyer, to “create an original vision of Batman and his world for the film that brings the two DC Comics icons together.”

I gotta say, it’s a hell of a casting coup. Personally, I didn’t think Affleck would ever willingly give up so much creative control on a movie again, especially after winning wide acclaim and box office success as an actor and director for “The Town” and “Argo”. It looks like Warner Bros. has been after him for a while now. As you’ll recall, he was previously rumored to be playing Batman in a “Justice League” movie, and at one point was even rumored to be directing said “Justice League” movie.

But instead, he’ll play Batman in a Zack Snyder movie. Who knows, maybe he’ll end up actually directing that “Justice League” movie after all when he reprises the role?

Ben Affleck as Batman will battle (then probably team up with) Henry Cavill as Superman in the untitled comic book film, currently set for July 17, 2015, with production kicking off in 2014. Which means, yes, kids, that’s a “Batman/Superman” movie and “The Avengers 2″ in the same summer. How lucky are you, comic book geeks and geekettes?

Maybe Bale knew that he was on the losing side.. after marvel launch ironman, thor, captian america, and averager… Bale was like…. If i can’t beat them, may as well Join them.. I wouldn’t be surprise if Bale show up in a Marvel movie.

      • Juggernaut

its been know they were going to reboot Batman for a long time now…I was willing to give Superman vs Batman a chance depending on the casting..but this just put the nail in the coffin.

  • clarkspark

Ugh….really? I don’t know man….I like his movies and all that but as Batman?

  • Juggernaut

There are going to be a lot of haters but DAMN, this is a really good choice! I have always been a fan of Affleck but even after great performances in films like Hollywoodland, The Town and Argo it never even occured to me to have him play Batman. Even when they were naming him a s a frontrunner to direct the Justice League movie I thought that he’d make a good Maxwell lord but it didn’t occur to me to cast him as Batman. With his charm, dramatic chops and action film resume I think he’ll nail the role. Can’t wait!

    WTF

    • JasOn Vu

i know… this same dude playd DAREDEVIL

  • Etn

and of course Afflec played the Superman character in Hollywoodland, albeit as in a movie in a movie

    • Hawho

      It will go like this.

Batman tries to find Superman’s weakness which would be clark’s adoptive mom(Diane Lane). Ben..Batman will then try to score with her by dressing as TV Superman. This causes movie Superman to develop a new power called SmokeEars which will make this movie a comedy.

Hell they can save money by taking the parts from Hollywoodland.

      In other news.
Kevin Bacon can be the new Lex Luthor or he can play a male version Oracle.
