It’s not Jon Hamm, or Jeffrey Dean Morgan, or the 50 other actors that 50 other sites have claimed unnamed sources as telling them has either landed, is being considered, or is director Zack Snyder’s top choice to play Batman in Warner Bros.’ upcoming (and as yet, still untitled) Superman/Batman team-up movie.
It’s Ben Affleck.
The award-winning star and director of “Argo”, “The Town”, and the man who previously played a Marvel superhero, will be suiting up in the cape and cowl as a grizzled, veteran Batman in Snyder’s upcoming “Man of Steel” follow-up. Warner Bros. made the official announcement themselves via a press release, which, let’s face it, must be some kind of a first. Usually a fansite or one of the trades will break the news first.
Ending weeks of speculation, Ben Affleck has been set to star as Batman, a.k.a. Bruce Wayne. Affleck and filmmaker Zack Snyder will create an entirely new incarnation of the character in Snyder’s as-yet-untitled project—bringing Batman and Superman together for the first time on the big screen and continuing the director’s vision of their universe, which he established in “Man of Steel.” The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.
Henry Cavill will return as Superman, along with “Man of Steel’s” Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.
The idea is for Snyder, along with writer David Goyer, to “create an original vision of Batman and his world for the film that brings the two DC Comics icons together.”
I gotta say, it’s a hell of a casting coup. Personally, I didn’t think Affleck would ever willingly give up so much creative control on a movie again, especially after winning wide acclaim and box office success as an actor and director for “The Town” and “Argo”. It looks like Warner Bros. has been after him for a while now. As you’ll recall, he was previously rumored to be playing Batman in a “Justice League” movie, and at one point was even rumored to be directing said “Justice League” movie.
But instead, he’ll play Batman in a Zack Snyder movie. Who knows, maybe he’ll end up actually directing that “Justice League” movie after all when he reprises the role?
Ben Affleck as Batman will battle (then probably team up with) Henry Cavill as Superman in the untitled comic book film, currently set for July 17, 2015, with production kicking off in 2014. Which means, yes, kids, that’s a “Batman/Superman” movie and “The Avengers 2″ in the same summer. How lucky are you, comic book geeks and geekettes?
