Official: Henry Cavill is Your New Man of Steel in Superman Reboot

So much for Jon Hamm or an older, more mature take on the Man of Steel. Warner Bros. and director Zack Snyder have officially announced that they’ve cast young Mr. Henry Cavill (who is 27-years old and counting) as their new Superman/Clark Kent for their upcoming reboot of the franchise. I guess it makes sense, in a way — a younger actor can continue on with the franchise for a while. No doubt Cavill has already been signed on for more than one picture, though as I’ve often said, that is as binding as a sports athlete’s contract, which is to say, not very.

Official press release ahoy:

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Henry Cavill has won the coveted role of Superman, the iconic superhero.

The film will be directed by Zack Snyder, who stated, β€œIn the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Besides playing the lead in Tarsem Signh’s upcoming “Immortals”, Cavill is also one of the stars of Showtime’s raunchy period show “The Tudors”.

“Superman” reboots December 2012.

Cool Stories From Zergnet

  • Shazam!

That first pic totally sells me on the guy! Bring it on!

  • The Strongest There Is

Intrigued….Still not happy if the story is starting all over again, but we will see what happens. I’m very excited with the talent they have behind the camera and as it stands now, in front of it. Am I wrong to want a more rugged Superman? While asking that I only mean to point out the difference in the two pics in the article. The first one just looks like bland pretty faced white guy to me (No racial tension…I only mean to compare and contrast the relationship between cliche strong chinned white guys, as everyone does the same for say Britney Spears to Christina Aguilera to New Jewel to the many “Hot” white females cast over and over again in similar roles in film. There’s not much of a defining attribute between any of them. Just another face.)

I just find myself being a lot happier saying “Look at the new superman” and focusing on the bottom picture as opposed to saying the same and looking at the top. One has character, and the other just looks like privileged cliche 20 something douche.

    • http://www.beyondhollywood.com/ Nix

You gotta figure he’ll be more of the top pic than the bottom unshaven look. This is Superman/Clark Kent after all. Clean cut, Boy Scout, etc.

      • The Strongest There Is

You’re definitely right. I just really hunger for a down to earth gritty superman flick where he doesn’t have to be a 50′s fit business man who has a cape anymore. Maybe It’s time I write my own to satisfy my needs lol.

  • http://twitter.com/Terminator2366 Bad Zack

i wanted tom welling – he was endorsed by christopher reeves

    • Supes

no, he wasn’t… never did chris reeve endorse anyone…. read the book “Still Me”.

btw, it’s christopher reeve, not christopher reeves… unless you are refering to george reeves

No. We need new and no matter who approves him it still Warner Bros character. I have no problem with them starting over seeing as Superman Returns was more a retread then a reboot like it should have been. Hopefully and I can’t stress this enough they need to introduce more of his rogues gallery. I loved Kevin Spacey’s Lex but only if they based it on the business man 80′s scientist industrialist it would of been better. We also need Brianiac, Metallo, Intergang, and Parasite maybe a Supergirl connection and let’s not forget the Legion of Superheroes that would help with the creating new franchises to compete with Marvel/Disney. Oh yeah I almost forgot we need to see a live action Darkseid.

    • The Strongest There Is

hahaha…dag. You want it all. I have to agree with you but when i first read the statement, I was thinking “how will they fit this into one movie” and then i thought about the franchise.

  • Shazam!

While I understand what you’re saying “Strongest” – to want a rugged Superman is sort of to wish for someone that isn’t Superman. Again, I get what you’re saying, but without a doubt the greatest Superman stories out there are the ones that tackle the character as he is, and don’t try to re-create it. I’m glad they cast someone with that chiseled look – a look that Routh lacked in my opinion.
Superman is the ultimate force of good – he’s clean cut – he’s wonderbread. That isn’t to say he can’t get knocked around and scuffed up – which I hope we see – I just want to see Superman throw a punch on the silver screen and I’ll be happy – but if you want rugged in the DC universe, go with Green Lantern or the Flash.

    Bring it on Mr. Snyder!

    • Supes

watch Superman/Batman:Apocalypse. this is the type of “roughing-up” that we are looking for in a Superman movie.

      • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

Or the Jusstice League episodes “War World” (Season 1), “Twilight” (Season 2 Premiere), “For the Man who has Everything” (Based on the Alan Moore story of the same name, Season 3/JLU Season 1), and “Clash” (Season 3/JLU Season 1), and finaly “Destroyer” (Season 4/JLU Season 2 finale) which has in my opinion the best fight between Supes and Darkseid until “S/B: Apocalypse”

  • Juggernaut

I’m really happy with Cavill! I’ve always said that either Matt Bomer or Cavill would be awsome!

  • Martin_er

What can I say….Take thaaaaat!!! Tom’s welling fans, excellent choice…

  • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

I think he’ll do well. He definitely has the look to pull it off, plus he’s right in the middle age of not too young and not too old to re-start a franchise. And as TSTI said the talent behind the lens and script is good so we should get a pretty decent film. I really want an action packed Superman film for once in 20 years.

  • Lasasasas

he will do shit like the others if you ask me i dont realy want another superman that looks like superman from the batman.
    rember that episode?
superman was skinner then the batman him self.
    it was wrong
if you ask me it seem better to have tom welling becouse smallville is coming to end this year. and thus it look awsome to see him move onto the man in tights this time plus hes the right hight and build for it more build then any of the previous superman and the right build to match the dc comics. unlike the others,

    • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

Um Welling is just as small as this dude. It’s not like that pic of him was taken FOR Superman. He’ll bulk up a bit, and they’ll probably pad the suit slightly. he’s a decent actor and a good choice. Having Welling would make it “Smallville: The Adventrue Continues” And that WE don’t want. Plus anyone not really familiar with the the show may assume that the movie is connected because of Welling. I for one like Cavill. Although, and I know I’m opening a can of worms, I’m surprised no debate on the fact that he’s british has come up. We know how the fanboys (and I am one, though I deal with chang e better than most ;-) ) like to complain about details.

      • Lasasasas

true, its just some things are annoying i mean so many reboots its like film makers now have no brains and cant come up with anything eles. or somthing i mean most remakes of films suck any way. or they make film first time. it sucks ass. aka spiderman
and then decide to reboot. and now this spiderman for spiderman movie is skinnyer i mean XD lols….

if you cant do the film right or remakes of old classics dont do it it just ruine it for hardcore fans and fans of the genration that watch it and thus put them off the whole thing.

        • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

technically this is the first reboot. “Returns” was a continuation on the previous movies but as if 3&4 never happened.

As for Spidey, he never should be overly muscular. Spidey always looks best wiry. He should have a swimmer’s body, slim but muscular. That reboot is needed, but currently my faith in it is up in the air.

  • Jwest18

I think this was a great casting choice. Even though Tom Welling was my first choice, this guy definitely has the look, and after watching some clips of him on You Tube, I am sold! Now if they would just choose Mila Kunis to play Lois Lane, I would be delighted!

    • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

I like Kunis, but as Lois? I’m not seeing that. There’s a rumor that Malin Ackerman (silk Spectre) is either interested or has auditioned. Not feeling that either. I’d have to say we need a much more active version of Lois. Erica Durance, Terri Hatcher, Margot Kidder, and Dana Delaney (animated) all got the part right in the sense that they were willing to put themselves at risk to get a story. I want a Lois who’s been in the trenches, literally. How about Summer Glau! Or Tannit Phoneix (since she’s not gonna be WW)

I could see Malin Ackerman. Jessica Biel is my pick After seeing her in The A-Team and Elizabethtown. In both films she plays a strong, kinda bitchy, do anything to get what she wants kind of character. That, in my opinion, is exactly what Lois needs to exude. Plus Biel is hot! She has the sharp features that I want in a lois too. I’d like to see Terry O’Quinn as Lex too. The buissiness tycoon/politician Lex, not the mad scientist/real estate Lex. With an imposing enemy as his major foe for the movie as Lex schemes behind the scenes. I can’t wait for more casting news in the coming months!

        • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

I see your Jessica Biel and raise you a Rachel McAdams. Just watch “Sherlock Holmes” and she’d be perfect.

          • Juggernaut

I like McAdams a lot. She is one of the most versatile actresses in Hollywood. However, in my opinion she was the weakest part of the Sherlock Holmes reboot. I didn’t buy her as the sassy, backstabbing, hold her own character. I think that she might get stuck in that same rut as Lois. It’s a shame that time plays such a vital role in these projects. My dream Lois was always Janine Turner (Northern Exposure, Strong Medicine)now 48 or Paige Turco (The Game Plan, The Stepfather) now 45.

          • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

Either woulda worked, and i agree about McAdams in regards to “Holmes” but still think she’d do decent. Emily Blunt?

          • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

I agree about McAdamss regarding “Holmes” but i think she could work. Another choice, Emily Blunt?

          • Juggernaut

I think that Emily Blunt is a great choice. The thing with her is she is such a chameleon. There are no two pictures that I can find where she looks the same! Lol.Sometimes she’s blonde, sometimes she’s a redhead, sometimes she’s a brunette, sometimes jet black. Short hair, long hair, curly, straight! Even her facial features seem to change! In some pics she has a rounder, wider face while others she has a sharp pointy look. Done right, sharp, pointed features. Mid lenth to long, brown to black hair she would fit the bill. Her performances in The Devil Wears Prad and Sunshine Clening show that she could diliver the right performance for Lois.
