I was already kind of interested in the Wachowskis’ next movie, “Ninja Assassin”, but now I’m really excited. Why? One word: Sho Kosugi is back! Back where, you ask? In “Ninja Assassin”, of course. Also, I should probably stop calling “Ninja Assassin” a movie by the Wachowski Brothers, since although they’re producing, they didn’t write it, despite previous reports that said otherwise. Instead, in this official release by Warner Bros. on the film (which has begun shooting in Berlin, Germany), the script credits goes to Matthew Sand and Babylon 5 mastermind J. Michael Straczynski, with the Wachowskis and Joel Silver producing. In any case, head on below to find out what it’s all about.
From Warner Bros. Pictures, via Comingsoon:
Ninja Assassin follows Raizo (Rain), one of the deadliest assassins in the world. Taken from the streets as a child, he was transformed into a trained killer by the Ozunu Clan, a secret society whose very existence is considered a myth. But haunted by the merciless execution of his friend by the Clan, Raizo breaks free from them… and vanishes. Now he waits, preparing to exact his revenge.
In Berlin, Europol agent Mika Coretti (Naomie Harris) has stumbled upon a money trail linking several political murders to an underground network of untraceable assassins from the Far East. Defying the orders of her superior, Ryan Maslow (Ben Miles), Mika digs into top secret agency files to learn the truth behind the murders. Her investigation makes her a target, and the Ozunu Clan sends a team of killers, led by the lethal Takeshi (Rick Yune), to silence her forever. Raizo saves Mika from her attackers, but he knows that the Clan will not rest until they are both eliminated. Now, entangled in a deadly game of cat and mouse through the streets of Europe, Raizo and Mika must trust one another if they hope to survive…and finally bring down the elusive Ozunu Clan.
James McTeigue will direct.
More: Starring Korean pop star Rain as Raizo; Naomie Harris (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End) as Europol researcher Mika Coretti; Ben Miles (V For Vendetta) as Europol Agent Ryan Maslow; legendary martial arts performer Sho Kosugi (Revenge of the Ninja) as the ruthless leader of the Ozunu Clan; and Rick Yune (Die Another Day) as Raizo’s rival, Takeshi.
Hear that, kids? Sho Kosugi! Holy cow. I’ve been a fan of this guy since I was a kid. I’m pretty sure I’ve even seen all of his ninja movies, from “Enter the Ninja” to “Revenge of the Ninja” to even the atrocious “Ninja III: The Domination”. Heck, I didn’t even now Sho was still working!
But he’s not just working, he’s also apparently starring in a new ninja movie in America, too. A quick trip to IMDB.com ran up a new movie called “The Return of the Ninja” that Sho is currently attached to star in, in which, “The last ninja master travels to America to find an heir to the martial arts legacy.” IMDB.com lists Steven E. de Souza as a writer, but no one else attached. Although I’m not sure how much to take this as fact, as the film was announced 3 years ago, and nothing seems to have happened with it yet…
