Spike Lee’s “Oldboy” remake sure seems to be having a hard time finding its other two pivotal roles. With Josh Brolin locked in the lead of a fellow mysteriously imprisoned for 15 years only to be released and seek vengeance, the search is on for the man who imprisoned him (aka the villain) and the young lass who aids him in his vengeance seeking (aka the female lead).
With Christian Bale and Colin Firth having turned down offers to play the villain, Twitch now reports that the powers that be behind the remake have offered the role to Clive Owen, who if he signs on, would be re-teaming with his “Inside Man” director. So yeah, of all the actors who have been offered, he’d probably be the first one to say Yes. Unless, of course, he didn’t like working with ol Spike Lee on “Inside Man”, then he’d say No, I guess.
Twitch, meanwhile, also says that “Alice in Wonderland’s” Mia Wasikowska has been offered the female lead, with Rooney Mara of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” having said No to the movie.
Here’s the ironic thing about all these casting and “offering” news. I’m sure Twitch is getting a ton of traffic off it, but I’ll be interested to know how Lee and the guys behind the remake feel. After all, it can’t be very kind on the ego to have reports out there that people you’re offering major roles to are turning them down. See what’s happened to “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”. Not a single Hollywood actress with any name recognition seems to want to be caught dead (ahem) near that film, and now it’s in doubt if the film will even happen.
So we’ll see if Owen and Wasikowska say Yes to the roles, or if Lee and company will have to make more offers in the coming weeks…
