The whole slit-mouthed woman urban legend in Japan seriously freaks me out. The imagery alone is enough to loosen my bowels, especially once you factor in the whole uber-creepy “Am I pretty?” nonsense. Freaky, freaky stuff. Seriously freaky stuff. That having been said, the trailer for “Kuchisake-onna Returns”, a film which incorporates the legend into its storyline, is nothing short of hilarious. How hilarious, you ask? You’re about to find out. Or not.
Before indulging, check out this plot synopsis from Nippon Cinema:
Megumi Ohori stars as Airi, a graduate student majoring in the study of folklore. As part of her studies, she decides to travel to a small village with a group of friends to investigate local legends. Unbeknownst to her, the villagers worship “kuchisake-onna” (the slit-mouthed woman) as living gods and intend to offer her and her friends up as a human sacrifice. Eventually, Airi is wounded and fights back by becoming a “kuchisake hunter”.
