One Seriously Badass Trailer for the Japanese Action Flick Gantz

Gantz (2010) Movie Image

I haven’t read the comic on which its based, but the I can tell you this much: The full-length trailer for the upcoming Japanese action opus “Gantz” looks extremely cool. And I’m not just saying that because I have a hard-on for lithe Asian peeps in skintight black outfits, either. Well, that might have something to do with it, but it’s not the only reason I’m eagerly anticipating this two-part epic’s eventual arrival onto North American shores. At present, the first entry in the series will hit Japanese theaters this January, while the second installment arrives in the spring of 2011. When the movies make their presence known elsewhere remains to be seen. I await this news with baited breath.

Here’s a meaty synopsis courtesy of Nippon Cinema:

The films are based on Hiroya Oku’s long-running manga about two students who die in a train accident only to be brought back to life by a mysterious black sphere called GANTZ. The pair, played by Kazunari Ninomiya of the pop group Arashi and actor Kenichi Matsuyama, receive enhancement suits which give them the superhuman abilities needed to complete a series of alien assassination missions. Through these missions they earn “points” toward buying their own freedom, but various incidents complicate matters along the way.

Excited? You should be. Whenever you’re ready to have your mind thoroughly blown, turn your attention to the embedded clip. It’s pretty darn swift if you ask me.

Todd was raised on a steady diet of Hollywood blockbusters, late-night Cinemax programming, and USA’s “Up All Night,” which may explain why his taste in movies is more than a little questionable. When he isn’t providing news and reviews for Beyond Hollywood, he can be found lounging lazily on his couch, perched in front of his television, or dwelling in places where direct sunlight can be easily avoided. He's happily married, in his 30's, and totally badass. If you'd like to reach Todd, you can follow him on Twitter or send him email/scoops to todd (at) beyondhollywood.com.

The manga is well worth a read.

You see this is what i’m talking about when it comes to manga or anime live action films just live it to the japanese, because some how they seem to get the point across the right way, don’t let hollywood touch manga or anime because your just gonna end up with Dragonball Execution. I here they wanna do BLEACH for the love of god dont let them touch it.

instead of the Gi things they wear its going to be black leather jackets and pants. instead of ichigo its ian

Bleach wouldn’t even work here since it’s based around Japanese spiritual beliefs…since in the West the color white is for good guys they’ll take one look at Aizen and the Arrancar and be like oh they’re the good guys…*head desk*

Not true. if the anime and manga can be translated and all the fans understand and love the show it can be done. It just has to be explained. Even if we get an opening narrative explaining things a bit, exposition can take care of the rest as long as it’s not too much. Lord of the Rings did a great job of it in the opening to the first film. Take that approach to explaining the world of the Soul Revers and such and boom there you go.

I say if america makes any live action versions of anime or manga it should have Us money, Us technology and expereince with SFX but story from japanese writers (translated by american manga/anime enthusiasts like the anime themselves) and japanese director and cast if possible. I think DiCaprio’s idea for “Ninja Scroll” would work if he ever gets around to it. He wasnts to cast some J-pop people in the main roles (thats the thing now j-pop star to actor) and set it in Japan. Good for him, none of this americanizing of the story.

Gantz got a movie? I had to ditch the manga as it’s currently all going to hell and I’m over apocalypse mangas after NaruTaru traumatized the hell out of me…I didn’t even know it got an anime.

I love Arashi but I could swear I saw my beloved Kanata Hongo in there too

Eh…my anime list is kind of hefty at the moment and I wasn’t so enamored with Gantz until WAY into the story so I’ll pass. I have a few anime from spring and summer 2010 to still finish let alone the fall stuff with Index 2.

  • The Strongest There Is

Does Gantz take a minute to get going as a series? I tried to watch the Anime and felt like i was slowly becoming one with my sofa out of boredom. I only made it about 5 eps in.

The Anime did drag out a lot of unnecessary scenes. (not to mention butchered the ending)
I’d recommend the manga, once you get into it it’s one of the best.
