Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Only God Forgives” is one of my most anticipated movies of 2013. Described as a Muay Thai revenge western, how can it not be on the list. The follow up to “Drive”, and another partnering with star Ryan Gosling, they’re back with a quick new teaser.
Clocking in at 20 seconds, this video doesn’t tell you much detail wise, but you see Gosling and co-star Kristen Scott Thomas, and glimpses of a couple rough looking fights. What you do walk away from is a sense for the tone and atmosphere of “Only God Forgives”. There’s a deliberate, subdued feel, one that is infused with the potential for moments of explosive violence. Of all the things that Refn does well, this might be the best. All of his films have a thoughtful, reflective pace, but one that is always on the verge of brutality.
Here’s a synopsis:
Julian (Gosling) lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed their mother, Jenna (Kristen Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julian’s contacts in the criminal underworld lead him directly to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly.
“Only God Forgives” doesn’t have an official release date, but it’s widely assumed that it will premiere at Cannes later this year, and hit theaters sometime after that.
