Open Discussion Thread: Dragonball Evolution

You’ve seen pictures from it, you’ve seen clips from it, you’ve read the early reviews from Japan, and you’ve been dreading it. But today is the first day you’ll actually be able to see James Wong’s “Dragonball: Evolution” and finally decide for yourself. This is your official discussion thread for what might just be the most wildly discussed, dissed, and dissected movie of 2009. Who knew a kid with spikey hair would elicit such a variety of responses? So did you see it? And if you did, what did you think?

A young boy named Goku seeks out upon his grandfather’s dying request to find the great Master Roshi and gather all seven Dragon Balls (of which he has one) in order to prevent Piccolo from succeeding in his desire to use the Dragon Balls to take over the world.

Starring: Justin Chatwin, James Marsters, Emmy Rossum, Yun-Fat Chow, Jamie Chung, Joon Park, Randall Duk Kim, Eriko Tamura, Ernie Hudson, Texas Battle, Luis Arrieta, Shavon Kirksey, Richard Blake

Directed by: James Wong

Cool Stories From Zergnet

its not dragonball, but its a good movie nonetheless, not awesome, but good, every girl in my neighborhood loved it, the nerds didnt though, but hell, theres more girls than nerds in the world so i reckon its impossible to fail financially, even the nerds went to see it though they hated it.

but they better do better on the sequel and blow my mind off, they could could have done more in this one. now thats the love story is done is part, they better have more fights on the next one, and just in better bulk up.

heres what i saw, all the old fans hated it cuz its strayed far from the orginal plot, but every new comer loved it cuz they thought the anime was dumb and didnt need any brains. and this movie opened up dragonball to the “thinking” and “sentimental” class of movie goers, so i guess it can sacrifice some of the old die hard fans since its gaining more from the ones who used to didnt like it and the ones who are new to the series.

im a die hard fan to the anime, but i open up to this movie. i give this a
6 out of 10, its good, sequel should be epic. and please still use martsters as piccolo.

    1st?

“this movie opened up dragonball to the “thinking” and “sentimental” class of movie goers”

U serious? I guess alot of M.night fans will love this movie because they will do alot of “thinking”. I see ur one of those dragonball fans that don’t care about the crap Fox and James wong have done to the classic dragonball just to make a quick buck, if u like this crap of a movie then u will like any crap that is thrown at u of dragonball…..ur definitely a fan!

    • xericho

read what i said, lulz, the reason i love this movie is CUZ ITS NOT DRAGONBALL, the anime just doesnt translate well to live action, i like this movie nomatter what its title is, i love it for the ki blasts and fight scenes and the funny love story, its not a great movie, but its good.

cmon… look at db cosplays… the best ones still look rdiculous, i would have prefered goku to be wearing red leather ala K’ from KoF in this movie instead of the original which just looks funny in live action, even the hair lulz, and who would want to see a midget bald guy fight?

same reason i dont like a 5’3, ugly looking wolverine with funny hair like they have in the comics.

this movie is good not cuz its dragonball, hell, they should have changed the title, i like the dragonball anime, but i like this better cuz i actually have to use my brain to understand it.

you must have only one neuron and with brain damage.

      • Raye

if its not dragonball THEN WHY THE HELL CALL IT DRAGONBALL?! DUH!!!!!!!
point is it was utter CRAP and they just used the title, labelled it that and used the character names and thats it to make a quick buck because the franchise was uber popular and succesful so they wanted to cash in on that and well ho ho thank god they didnt and the REAL fans didnt go see it and didnt support it at all!

We’re not oppose to change, in fact we know stuff gonna be modified to make it a plausible live-action movie but dont go crapping on it and labelling it something it CLEARLY IS NOT!
cuz i’ll tel you that ATROCITY isnt Dragon ball!! so again dont call it something when its not it and has absolutely nothing to do it!

I plan on seeing this movie today. I have no exspectations of it, just go in there and apreciate that they made Dragonball into a live action movie. I’m a big fan of the cartoon, and will enjoy it. YES I know they changed some things but I don’t care, I’ll go watch the DVD’s that I have if I want to see the original. Take it like this,…..this is Dragonball not Dragonball Z. Dragonball was cheesy and the fighting was not all that great,….remember? I know for a fact that the sequal will be much bigger and much better becasue I.E., Vegeta will be in it and we all know how crazy he is, so just take this one digest it and move on to the next one. Trust me the studioes are listining and they will make the next one much better. I’ll give my take one the movie later today.

I have mix feeling about the movie. I went to the theater very open minded, and it worked. I mean, I actually enjoy most of the movie taking into account that this is not Dragonball Z but an adaptation to Dragonball, which turns to be more for small kids than grown ups. However I must say I was VERY disapointed with the final battle and specially with the Kame-Hame Ha. It wasn’t exiting at all, instead was a very rushed ending and many loose endings (that will work like a charme if they make a good sequel).

Justin Chatwin makes a funny Goku, which works for Dragonball (Evolution), however he will have to train REALLY hard as the sequels go by because his character grows up both body and mind while time goes by, so I hope he will be up to the task for the future. Mr. Chatwin, so far so good.

I was kind of bumped about the fact that Piccolo is a very small part of the movie and that he don’t really shows us the real menace he is. Instead his appearence is just for a few minutes and a very green Goku is able to defeat him without problems. Piccolo is a badass, c’mon!!!!. You failed on this one. Not your fault though, Mr. Masters.

The rest of the characters were ok. Bulma, Yamtcha and Roshi did a nice job working together.

We really needed to see more intense training for Goku in the future films than the really lame air bending training that is showed on Evolution. We need to belive this youngster is going to defend us from Vegeta and the Sayians, so… GET TO WORK, SCREEWRITERS!.

By saying that I will give 7.5/10 points given the effort and the relative small bugdet (50 million) they had to spend.

To the hardcore fans: The movie is appointed for little kids, so try not to fill the air with negative energy. It’s ok for starters. The second one should blow our minds though. I’ll be a bitter guy if is not.

    • xericho

exactly, this movie was more or less made with a series in mind, give it a break, its just an opening for whats to come.

the ending did suck though… but wait… were complaining the ending is short, so obviously, that means we want more of what they were showing. which says that the movie is good and we want more.

      • rangamaru

If they indeed plan for a sequel, they should’ve made the first movie better than what you just called “good”. I don’t know about you, but the movie felt rushed. Running at about 85 minutes or so was bad for the script with many things left unexplained and feeling a bit weird. As a movie, apart from it being a DB adaptation, the only thing “good” from it was the first third of the movie. Then it all goes to HELL!

And, hey, a bald midget with no nose would be a cool addition to the cast! As well as a three eyed guy and a kid with doll-like red cheeks. If Hollywood wants to break out of the mold of sensible and logical comical adaptations, this would’ve been their chance.

Stephen Chow should’ve taught them a thing or two about Canto-comedy (King of Beggars, Duke of Mount Deer 1 & 2, God of Gamblers). Too bad he wasn’t really powerful enough in this production. I saw this movie, and I really hope they will be able to pull of a much much better sequel. But seeing reports from Box Office Mojo is currently putting my hopes on hold.

      • Takezo Kensei

The entire movie sucked big time!!!! not only was the fighting cheesy and looked so weak but the storyline was actually a sensless murder of the anime. Goku can turn oozaru yes but that wasnt his destiny???, and that he came in a meteor????
I knew that the film would suck but not THIS much sheesh!!!!! The only part i was really looking forward to was the kamehameha and even that sucked!!!!! It started off looking really cool and i was actually impressed but then they went and wrecked that too!!!! Why the god damn hell did he have to jump, that just wrecked possibly the only wicked moment in the entire film. The only good thing about the film was that it was only 1hr an 21mins long or i could have died. They barely even considered the series in it u moron!!!! why dont u ‘think’ about it. Tbh this film sucked ice and any sequal after it will too.
Dragonball Kai on the other hand is the right move to make to relive the classic awesome anime!!!!!

Man I give up, I give up on todays entertainment in society. If people really enjoy being spoon fed crap then damn, bring it on. Bring on the sequals and the spinoffs.

Use your brain??? I mean, really? There’s nothing at all in this movie to use your brain about. I mean, in all seriousness, this was one of the worste movies I have ever seen. There were so many problems with it was excruciating to watch. The story had very very little to it and the characters were so bland and most even pointless. Is this really what people want? Is this really what people concider to be entertaining and thought provoking? Cause I have seriously miss understood what all that means then…

and really, it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that it is nothing like the damn cartoon. As a stand alone movie or what ever you want to call it, it was horrable. Everything about it and yet it’s gonna make money and people are gonna say it’s good.

    • Leo

Tripur, my friend, this is “little kids” entertainment. The movie, with all his lack of story and coreograph, turns to give a kid a laugh without expletive lenguage nor gore nor blood, so if it makes a small kid to go out from the theater wanting to fly and make an air bending technique, then it worked!. I still want for them to make the sequel more extreme though, more like Dragonball Z.

      • rangamaru

Hmmm… yesss… Air bending… sounds like a lingo from a well known US animated series about the last air bender… Is there no more originality in this world that they have to “borrow” a term from another show? They should just leave it up to “ki” and not go anywhere else…

    • grizz

i agree, i think they could have made this a masterpiece, but instead they made a low budget poor excuse of a dragon ball movie. the characters worked i think and the voices of picollo and goku were spot on but roshi looked so much younger, wheres the perverted old man!? i would have much rather seen a small kid in orange completely destroying the red ribbon army. not a teenager in a big city fighting picollo for 5 min. when making a movie like this the best thing you can do is please the fans. it worked for DC it would work for dragonball.

      • Leo

Red Ribbon Army!!!. Grizz, that is a fantastic idea. Too late though. They could made a really great movie with that. Crapper!!
