Open Discussion Thread: G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra

Snake Eyes. Scarlett. Storm Shadow. Duke. And … Ripcord? Okay, so maybe not a whole lot of people who grew up with the ’80s cartoon, and who have been hoarding Joe action figures since they were a wee tyke will be showing up in theaters to see Marlon Wayans as Ripcord. But let’s face it, haven’t we all been waiting to see Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow bang swords on the big screen and in live-action forever? Well we’ve finally gotten our wish: “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra” opens today, and this is your official discussion thread.

Have you seen it? What did you think? Has Stephen Sommers raped your childhood? Or has he restored it to its full glory?

An elite military unit comprised of special operatives known as G.I. Joe, operating out of The Pit, takes on an evil organization led by a notorious arms dealer.

Starring Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Christopher Eccleston, Grégory Fitoussi, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Karolina Kurkova, Byung-hun Lee, Sienna Miller, Rachel Nichols, Kevin J. O’Connor, Gerald Okamura, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce, Dennis Quaid , Saïd Taghmaoui, Channing Tatum, Arnold Vosloo, Marlon Wayans, and directed by Stephen Sommers.

“G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra” — is it Go Joe, or No Go?

I went to the first showing today at my local theater. I was severely impressed with it!!! I went into it expecting it to be hokey and a piece of crap, but it blended the old cartoon with elements it needed to update for today very well. The way that they tied things together when explaining origins was awesome!!! Did you really expect Cobra Commander to be reptilian? That would make it too damn hokey if they did things like that. If the fight between Snake Eyes and Stormshadow as kids doesnt rock your friggin dome then you must have no soul. FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR better than Transformers 2. Best action movie Ive seen this year and cant wait for part 2. Thank You Stephen Sommers for making a very satisfying movie going experience!!!!

LOL You said it! The Kid swordsman fight was damn well choreographed!I was thinking this would be crap, but all the characters were used decently, the action was great and the villains were the s***! I geeked out When Rex took his mask off long enough to hear the familiar Cobra Comdr voice. My only complaint his Comdr’s mask at the end and his voice getting even deeper. lol

I liked Rise of Cobra, or as I like to call it “Lips of the Ninja” because of Snake Eyes’ lips in the suit. Ridiculous. That was MY biggest issue. it was Channing Tatum, it wasn’t a accentless Baroness, it wasn’t any of the things most of the fanboys are bitching about (and I AM ONE, so there!). It was them damned Lips WHY! He doesn’t talk so he doesn’t need rubber lips!!! Anyway I didn’t mind Cobra Commander’s voice. The deeper voie actually works to make him a bit less cartoony. Don’t believe me, check out “G.I.Joe:Resolute,” also out on DVD (came out same day). It’s the movie us fans wanted. It takes everything we loved as a kid about the cartoon and amps it up, and makes it more adult. People die, there are no lasers, and pilots don’t parachute out at the last second. Oh and Cobra Commander is not to be messed with. Or he will gut you. Right here, in front of everyone. And his voice is about what they used in the live action film.

LOL okay I am not alone there. I was wondering why Ray Park had to have the runner lip piece on his suit. lol I dug CC’s voice as the DR, I just didn’t get why it had to go all Barry White when he put on his Comdr mask for the big reveal at the end. I’m sure there is a scientific reason why ones voice would drop another decibel. Overall the Comdr character was effin’ awesome and I’m glad they went that route. Ever since I saw an episode of the Sigma 6 cartoon and he was kickin’ Duke’s arse, I saw how bad-ass Comdr couldbe portrayed. They indeed made him a worthwhile villain and I can’t wait to see Levitt fully integrated into the role in a couple years.

The thing I hate the most is the acting of Duke. Goshh! This guy can’t act at all! The expressions (if any) were so lame! I love Sienna Miller though! Gorgeous .. and love her acting!

I have yet to see the movie but will soon because movies don’t come to Kuwait Army base until a couple of weeks later but this is what bothers me with this movie. Like most movies based off (TV Cartoons, TV Sitcoms, Videogames, Books) if you are going to based the movie off this why changed everything around. Now the GI Joe movie starting with 1 When did Destro become anorexic? He was built in the original tv show! His voice sucks in the movie. 2 Zartan is awesome one of my favorite GI Joe characters, now I have no idea who that guy is supposed to be in the movie but he is no Zartan. Also Destroy didn’t like Zartan in the Original but in the movie Zartan works for Destroy but wait Cobra Commander originally hired Zartan as a mercinary. And where are the Dreadnaughts? 3 What the crap is up with the suits? Dumb! 4 The Baroness! Looks like her but what’s up with the #$%^ing accent, she had a strong European accent which made her even hotter but where is the $%^$ing accent, why is it soo hard for $%#@ing hollywood to do a $%^&ing accent right!!!!

    Hi there,
I saw the new GI joe movie and I did like it; but I have one main problem that I would like to see changed for the next sequal. This movie needs to be ‘R’ rated with BLOOD / REAL VIOLENCE / SEX / and all the other stuff that makes a war movie worth watching as a war or action movie. Think of Saving Private Ryan and then times that by TEN, then add some real villian acting from that of the Dark Night. You see, characters in this movie need to DIE and be brutally beaten with all the blood and gore that comes with this kind of scenery. Only then, will these critics who are determined to hate this movie come to accept it. Oh, and one or two hot sex scenes with partial nudity (scarlet & Baroness). Give the boys who grew up with these Hasbro toys the fantasy of their dreams! Do this and watch the $$$$ pile up!

    • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool aka Jiinx

But it wasn’t made for critics, it was mostly made for fans of the product, and anyone else that likes action just for the sake of it. By making it realistic it takes away from the sci-fi/fantasy aspect that makes it G.I.Joe. SHould characters die? Yes. SHould it be super violent and realistic. Not hardly. That doesn’t make it more relavent or anything. They also don’t want to market this to just adults. They want to get fresh, money spending kids in seats to sell toys. We aren’t going out to buy the new toys for ourselves (well most aren’t) after seeing this, but the younger generation.
