Pacific Rim 2 is Actually Happening … in 2017

April 7, 2017, to be exact. Don’t believe me? Here’s director Guillermo del Toro delivering the news all you “Pacific Rim” fans have been waiting to hear himself:

Del Toro is writing the script with Zak Penn and expects to go back behind the camera. He has previously said that the sequel will continue the adventures of Jaegar co-pilots Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi, along with their absent-minded scientist allies Charlie Day and Burn Gorman.

He told Buzzfeed as much:

The characters I love will return. Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.

I’ll admit, I’m surprised the sequel is actually happening, considering the original’s rough start at the box office. It did do very well overseas, though, out-earning the domestic numbers by a whopping 3 to 1 on its way to a global $400-plus take. So I’m guessing studio Legendary is looking at those numbers as the reason for greenlighting this.

Then again, 2017 is 3 years away, so who knows what’ll happen by then.
