Kirsty is absolutely right in that this review misinterprets the facts.

Xiaowei being forced to defend herself is not intended for the audience to question their beliefs! Maybe you need to watch the movie again and rethink this review

the scene with Peirong turning into a demon and walking through town was VERY hauntingly powerful… i wont forget it for awhile.

If you guys have read Liaozhai, you wouldn’t have found the movie weird, cos Liaozhai is essentially love stories. The director never wanted to make a horror movie, he actually goes to a great length not to make the movie scary. CGI effect and Kung fu are not the selling points, they’re neither sophisticated or elaborate cos they don’t need to be. The movie is romance through and through, it’s about love, marriage, responsibility, traditional moral values, temptation and self-sacrifice.

no, the intention is obviously to make the audience sympathetic to Peirong by showing all the men including Wang Sheng defending xiaowei, Peirong feeling isolated and defeated, watching xiaowei getting away with it. This also brings the tension between the wife and husband to the fore.

It’s a pretty weird movie to get a handle on. The bulk of the second half for instance is all melodrama romance stuff.

Thanx Nix I’ve been waiting for this review. Your thoughts seem to confirm my suspicions. Glad I didn’t get too hyped. As long as it’s better than An Empress and the Warriors I’ll be happy.
