Paul Thomas Anderson’s Scientology Movie The Master Adds to its Cast

Give him this, Paul Thomas Anderson sure picks some interesting projects. “Punch Drunk Love”? “There Will be Blood”? He’s like Terrence Malick, only with less facial hair.

His latest is “The Master”, a movie about Scientology that isn’t really about Scientology. Or at least, to avoid lawsuits from the lawsuit-happy religious organization, anyway.

PTA’s “The Master” will star Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams in lead roles, with recent additions Josh Close and Fiona Dourif (below, who if the name sounds familiar, that’s because she’s the daughter of Brad Dourif).

Set in the 1950s, “The Master” will star Hoffman as “a man who begins a faith-based belief system that closely resembles Scientology”, which begins to catch on in America. Close will play one of his leading disciples and right-hand man. Dourif’s role is unclear.

Laura Dern, Rami Malek, and Jesse Plemons are also in the cast.
