Paul Verhoeven to Direct Thomas Crown Affair Sequel?

Written by Nix | November 11th, 2007 | 0 Comments |

A scooper sent something interesting to the guys at Film Stalker, claiming that in an interview with Dutch radio, Dutch filmmaker (and former Hollywood director) Paul Verhoeven stated that he was scheduled to direct the sequel to 1999’s “The Thomas Crown Affair”, to be called “The Topkapi Affair”, which has been rumored to be taking place for a while now. IMDB.com has the movie listed with Pierce Brosnan returning as the titular Thomas Crown, and Angelina Jolie “attached”. But also according to Film Stalker’s scooper, he says that the sequel might have gone into the freeze with writer’s strike in full swing.

More:

The Topkapi Affair is based on the Peter Ustinov comedy and crime thriller, Topkapi, which tells of the story a small time crook who gets caught up in a big time robbery of the Istanbul Topkapi museum. Although he’s in over his head he rises up to the challenge along the way.

Pierce Brosnan has talked about the film a couple of times, and there’s been rumour that Angelina Jolie has signed on to star next to Brosnan, I think we’ll have to wait and see on that one.

I liked “The Thomas Crown Affair”, but didn’t LOVED it. It was good, breezy entertainment. Paul Verhoeven, on the other hand, I am a fan of, so it would be great to see him back doing American films, after having abandoned Tinseltown for Europe with “Black Book” recently.
