Agent 47 is back, but you’d be forgiven if you notice he doesn’t quite look like Timothy Olyphant anymore. The actor who played the killer assassin in 2007’s “Hitman” (before going on to the awesomest show on TV, “Justified”) has been replaced by Paul Walker.
In a reboot of the franchise, Walker will assume the role of Agent 47 in a new film directed by Aleksander Bach, a former commercials director who will be making his feature film debut with the now titled “Agent 47” movie.
Olyphant originally starred as the assassin in the Xavier Gens-directed 2007 film, which also co-starred Dougray Scott as the cop hunting him and former Bond girl Olga Kurylenko as a Russian hooker on the run. I thought the film had some nice action beats, and Olyphant was pretty slick and convincing as the uber killer, but then again, I never played the games, so I was just going by the movie.
Walker is expected to start work on the film as soon as he wraps up the promotional rounds for Justin Lin’s “Fast and Furious 6”, which promises to be a globe-hopping affair, so it’s anybody’s guess when he’ll finally get around to doing this. He is expected to shave his head for the role, though, so if you start seeing Paul Walker doing TV interviews with a bald head, then you know “Agent 47” is in production. (He should ask his “Fast and Furious 6” co-star Vin Diesel for pointers on that.)
No word on the plot of the reboot, but since they’re rebooting it, I suppose an origins story is in the cards. I remember that the first movie explored Agent 47’s origins a bit, but I think it was a mostly self-contained story.
