People Still Don’t Like Tom Cruise, Valkyrie Delayed Again

It’s official: people still don’t like Tom Cruise. Granted, lack of liking Tom Cruise may not be the main reason why his expensive WWII movie “Valkyrie” has been moved back yet again, but you know, for the purposes of making this post more interesting than it really is, we’re going to say it is, and move onward. Anyhow. According to The Hollywood Reporter, MGM has delayed the release of “Valkyrie” from October 2008 to the President’s Day weekend of 2009, this on top of the film having been previously delayed from a Summer 2008 opening.

More:

“Valkyrie,” which stars Tom Cruise and is being directed by Bryan Singer, was originally scheduled to be released June 27, 2008 before the studio opted to change it an October 2008 release date.

The studio said this latest move was directed at giving the film its best possible box office opening.

I used to think that a WWII movie directed by Bryan Singer and written by Christopher McQuarrie had to be good. To be bad, it would have to really make an effort. Then I saw the trailer and — eh. It could be mildly interesting, but as to really great? I doubt it. It’s hard enough making a movie about something we already know won’t succeed (the film’s conspiracy to kill Hitler), but add Tom Cruise into the mix and, if not box office poison, then at least, box office indifference.

My prediction is that this will be a dud. A very expensive dud. And it’s looking like pretty much everyone knows it.
