Peter Berg to Write and Direct Lone Survivor
Lone Survivor Movie — By Nix on August 21, 2007It looks like Marcus Luttrell’s true-story book “Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10″ is going to make it as a movie after all — and it’s going to be written and directed by Peter Berg, who is no stranger to Middle East-themed movies, having just finished up “The Kingdom”. The book was snatched up by Universal, who brought it to Akiva Goldsmith, who then sent it along to Peter Berg, who has agreed to do it. All this, according to Deadline Hollywood. You can read about Hollywood’s war for the war book here.
More about “Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10″:
On a clear night in late June 2005, four U.S. Navy SEALs left their base in northern Afghanistan for the mountainous Pakistani border. Their mission was to capture or kill a notorious al Qaeda leader known to be ensconced in a Taliban stronghold surrounded by a small but heavily armed force. Less then twenty-four hours later, only one of those Navy SEALs remained alive.
This is the story of fire team leader Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of Operation Redwing, and the desperate battle in the mountains that led, ultimately, to the largest loss of life in Navy SEAL history. But it is also, more than anything, the story of his teammates, who fought ferociously beside him until he was the last one left-blasted unconscious by a rocket grenade, blown over a cliff, but still armed and still breathing. Over the next four days, badly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell fought off six al Qaeda assassins who were sent to finish him, then crawled for seven miles through the mountains before he was taken in by a Pashtun tribe, who risked everything to protect him from the encircling Taliban killers.
I gotta get me this book…

I hope the movie is as good as the book.
I hope hollywood doesn’t screw this up. No America/US military hater actors should be allowed to make a dime of the millions this movie should make, such as, but not limited to: Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Alec Baldwin and their ilk. Stay true to the book and what the US Navy SEAL,s stand for.
This could be the greatest movie ever. I hope they follow everything from the book.
If the movie follows everything that was written in the book, This could turn out to be the best movie ever made. It would suck to see the movie turn out to be not as good as the book. And they gotta use good actors that can play the roles just right.
one of the best books ever written. fiction and non-fiction. if this movie is done right it could very well be one of the top ten movies ever made. unfortunately, hollywood tends to dissapoint with these types of movies. gotta have faith in peter berg who has done some really good movies though. these guys will never get as much respect as they deserve for the job they do for our country and others. my heart and prayers are with them and their families. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!
I am so looking forward to this film. As with the previous posts, I’m hoping they stick to the text and that Mr. Luttrell retained creative control to ensure everything is factual and not distorted into a soapbox for issues not related to the events in the book. A friend of mine who was reading this with her book club of ladies suggested this to me. It’s one of my top two favorites. Humorous and poignant at different times, gripping, and proof that sometimes art must imitate life. Here’s hoping Mr. Berg gives it the respect it’s due and doesn’t hire a cast of, albeit talented, actors who take every opportunity to complain about the efforts taken to make sure they retain their right to complain.
This is probably the best books I have ever read! I hope Hollywood does this movie right.
Easily the greatest book I have ever read. The truth behind what the U.S. Special Forces go through is just extraordinary. Dying and fighting for our country. The Navy SEALs are the biggest badasses in the military along the Recon Marines. This is what people need to read, and hopefully if they dont screw this up, this could be one of the greatest war movies, maybe even movie ever put on the silver screen. Ooyah! Oorah!
I agree with all of you there is so much potential for this movie to be great but the problem is we all know somehow hollywood will fuck this up. Also House to House is another great war read. enjoy.
Berg should find some actual current/former Navy SEALs to do the acting for Danny, Michael, and Matt. Find an actor for Marcus. He looks like Ryan Reynolds. I know they had some real SEALs acting the part for the movie “The Rock”. I think it would give the movie so much more validity, and I’m sure there are a more than a few SEALs who could be taught to act quite well to do the part, besides, the weapons etc. would be natural to them and they would do it right. I’m so sick of the Hollywood shows with guys not knowing how to hold guns and no recoil from the shots either.
