Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga Adopt Evil in Orphan
Horror Movie News, Orphan (2009) Movie — By Nix on November 30, 2007
You’re childless, and you feel like raising a kid (just to be like everyone else on the block, of course), and so you decide to adopt. So what happens? You end up adopting the daughter of Satan. Or something similar to that. That’s what happens to Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga in the upcoming horror movie “Orphan” for producer Joel Silver’s Dark Castle Entertainment.
More:
Story revolves around a husband and wife (Sarsgaard and Farmiga) who lose a baby and then adopt a 9-year-old girl who is not nearly as innocent as she claims to be. David Leslie Johnson penned the screenplay, which is based on a story by Alex Mace.
Shooting is scheduled to begin next week in Toronto and Montreal.
Hopefully this will be a breakthrough movie for Vera Farmiga. I’ve been a fan of hers since her TV days on “UC: Undercover”, and she had a decent part in Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed”.

I am filled with dismay to see this movie is being made!! As the adoptive parent of two older adopted kids, this is horrifying to me. I have a daughter adopted at 13 years old, and a son adopted at 10 years old. They are wonderful, amazing children. I have devoted my life to promoting the cause of adoption of older children but this movie will promote the idea that older kids are all horrible. SHAME on the writers of this film!!

if the adoptees of which you speak are dissuaded by this movie, then this movie has performed a wonderful service in weeding out easily influenced parental candidates, wouldn’t you say?
sorry,i meant to say that if the adoptive parents are easily dissuaded by this movie…good riddance!!
I totally agree. I am sad to see this movie being made. We are in the process of adopting an older child. Is is not easy and we have done tons and tons of research (looks like they don’t do this upfront in this movie) It breaks my heart that negative stereo types from the 18th century continue to be promoted. I understand wanting to come up with creative story lines (movies are surely lacking in that department) BUT this movie will negatively impact foster children in the US. Please leave the stereo types in the past where they belong.
OOPS – Did not mean to agree with above comment – meant it on another post. If you read my post you’ll understand.
oh shut up. it’s a movie for fucking sake
How, per se, do you figure it will negatively impact adoption in the US? Do you really think people are that stupid just because you obviously are? Please, don’t adopt, we don’t need any of your kids with your ideals and beliefs populating the Earth after you are gone.
There you go, I’ve just given you something worthy of being offended about. I insult your intelligence and laugh at your misguided ideals. I do this in regards to all morons who cross my path. Out of curiosity, when you go to the adoption agency, do you take a small yellow bus? Yes, yes you do, don’t you? …
LADY!!! It’s a movie! So you have two great kids. You are blessed, but this is a movie. Your logic is as ridiculous as saying you are horrified that a man’s wife kills him in some movie, when your own wife is a wonderful woman.
it’s just a movie. it’s not like they’re saying all orphans r evil. just like movies about haunted houses. they arent saying all houses r haunted. movies about the world ending. they arent saying the world is going to end tomorrow. it’s just entertainment. so stop freaking, i’m sure ur kids r wonderful.
THANK YOU!! I get so frustrated with people that complain about this movie and the “possible impact” on adoption. IT’S A FREAKING MOVIE, PEOPLE!! Iff you’re that easily influenced, you probably shouldn’t be adopting anyway!
Stating that a horror MOVIE about ONE little girl gone bad is hardly saying ALL older adopted children are bad. You are really taking this out of context lady. Stupidity is infectious, thanks for being a virus.
Hey, hey, hey! Have you actually SEEN this movie yet? If not, perhaps you should watch it before dissing it. And why should ALL movies about adopted kids be good? They have some good ones, a famous example would be Anne Of Green Gables, but like any topic, it can be good or bad. There are plenty of movies where biological children are total demons, and ones where the biological kids are complete angels (Little Lord Fauntlorouy- I admit I’m not sure the spelling….) so just because the orphan is evil, doesn’t mean saying an older adoptive child is always going to be a little Demoness/Demon. Please don’t bash movies until you’ve seen them as well, that can show your ignorance if you don’t have all the facts yet please don’t make a judgment. I’m not trying to attack you, so please don’t take it that way.
Oh come ON…it’s just a MOVIE! Gee…yes…don’t adopt because you might accidentally adopt the daughter of SATAN!!!!! Give me a BREAK! It’s not going to effect adoptions in any way…..
If you ever try to adopt an older child I don’t think you would say this. While my opinion of adoption will not change we come up against a lot of people who are not supportive and in fast discouraging and negative.
“While my opinion of adoption will not change we come up against a lot of people who are not supportive and in fast discouraging and negative”
What the hell does this even mean? The puctuation, or lack thereof, is appalling. Also,”… in fast discouraging and negative” is this even English? You’re not even literate! Surely you jest that you are going to be allowed to adopt. Tell me there are standards that are upheld. If they allow people like you, with your imbecillic attitude and horrible English and grammar skills, to adopt then I am fearful FOR the children, not of them.
Here’s the correct English and grammar for what I think you were trying to convey. The changes are subtle, but they really make all the difference in the world when trying to convey the meaning of your statement.
“While my opinion of adoption will not change, we come up against a lot of people who are not supportive. People who are, in fact, discouraging and negative.”
And, I’m sure we all can agree, this comes across as intelligent, while yours came across as OFFENDING to those of us who love English! Maybe I should boycott YOU! o.O (haha) May I suggest you adopt a puppy or kitten and leave the kids to those with more brains in their heads? Orphans of the world will thank you and even if you screw up your cat, the rest of us won’t have to deal with it.
Ps: That’s not a cup holder, that’s your disk drive …
Yes adoption is hard. I know I adopted a little girl from Cambodia but saying that this movie will make adoption harder is ridiculous. I cannot understand why people are saying this. I can tell you that being around the adoption community for awhile now they do tend for find anything they can to complain about. This is MOVIE – don’t see it if you think it’ll affect you in some way!
If you watch a fictional movie, especially one that is a horror movie, and you are influenced by the subtext of the movie, not only should you not be adopting children, you shouldn’t be walking the earth.
I was adopted when I was nine. I’m not even kind of offended. I think its actually kind of insulting to the intelligence of a lot of people that this is being made an issue.
Although I wouldn’t mind seeing a movie based on evil foster parents, something far more common.
Rofl I love your reply, Jen; it’s so true! o.O haha

On a side note, those of you who are “offended” I have four things to say to you:
1. I’m sure this isn’t the first thing to offend you, it won’t be the last and I’m glad I don’t live with you and your negative, fearful attitude.
2. Get a grip, movies are made for entertainment. It’s really pathetic that you have to find something to be offended about. Go watch Idiocracy that movie is far more likely to occur. You can get offended for the lesser intelligent after … Oh, and I’m sure you will …
3. Do you stay up all night afraid that Freddy Krueger will get you? If not, you should, I hear he’s looking for you. ‘Cuz, you know, movies are real and we should all take them seriously and go overboard being un-intelligent fools.
4. Movie or no, I am an advocate for adopting, it does two things. It helps the little people who don’t have anyone, and it lowers population … which, if you look around you, is out of control. Bob Barker always talked about having your pets spayed and neutered … I think humans should take the same approach themselves. It’s too bad the parents of those who are offended by MOVIES didn’t take the same stance…
In closing, it is really sad that people have so little to do with their lives that they have to go out of their way to find something to nit-pick. If you really are so ignorant to not adopt because you watched a movie, then you seriously don’t deserve to pro-create or raise children. We have enough screwed up little people as it is because of poor parenting and neglect. I don’t think we need to add neuroticism to the parental standard.
honestly…i think that some people just LOOK for things to complain about on the internet. build a bridge and get over it. i think this movie looks really creepy…i can’t wait to see it. and then when my hubby wants to adopt a child i can say…”wait, i just saw this one movie and it freaked me out so no, lets NOT adopt an older child” and then we will end up adopting the daughter of satan at an earlier age. see? nobody can really win if you think about it.
I’ll tell what’s wrong with the adoptee in this movie…. she’s mad as H E L L that the government won’t let her have her original birth certificate.
Just curious… Why do you want your original birth certificate? Bio parent info? Did your parents give any of the info to you? I am a parent who adopted two kids and I was not given any bio parent info just a revised BC that includes my husband and my name as the birth parents. All other info on the BC was kept the same.
I was just wondering why you wanted the original BC. Thanks for sharing.
So that I can be treated the same as all other citizens in the United States and have the original certificate of my birth. I should not be discriminated against simply because I was adopted. It has nothing to do with my natural parents – I know who they are and have a relationship with both.
Amen sister!!!!!! We are all mad that we can not get our original birth certificates.
I am an adopted daughter of Satan. Heads are gonna roll if the government does not start opening the records for ALL my adoptee sisters and brothers. Daddy Devil and Uncle Beezlebub are on my side. Bwwwahahahahahaaa
Sorry to burst your bubble but Devil, Satan, Beelzebub, Lucifer, as well as a few other names all refer to the same being. You might want to do some background checks on your “uncles.” just wondering, who do you claim as your mom?
Uhm, Beelzebub isn’t the same. Beelzebub refers to a negative, satanic being, but not the devil himself.
And I agree with the majority of you; it’s just a movie. People need to quit whining about this. I don’t remember people crrying about The Omen, or the other various movies about satanic children. Damien in The Omen was adopted, too….yet it’s seen as fine, but this is not? Whatever.
It’s a movie. I’m about as afraid as pennywise the clown as I am of an evil orphan. Give me a break.
Nobody complained about Damien because adoption wasn’t trendy when it was released.
See now this little girl probably didn’t get a pony.
I am an adoptee, while not the daughter of Satan, I am the natural daughter of one of the adorable little gremlins from the 1980’s film. I stay up late, multiply and eat all the food in the house.
I recently published an article on adoption groups who plan to boycott the movie. Please feel free to read and comment:

It’s NOT like this is the first movie ever out there about evil children!
Did you all band together and boycott the “Omen” movies?
Do police officers boycott all the movies were cops are made fun of?
Do doctors boycott movies that portray them as incompetent or evil?
Do your neighbors refuse to watch movies about problems people have with their neighbors?
If you really think about it every movie ever made could piss somebody off!
Get a life Cathy.
Someone who gets a paycheck to report should report on something worth reading.
wonderful. give the movie as much publicity as you can! anyone not born yesterday KNOWS that whenever a movie is boycotted people LINE UP to see it. people will spend crap loads of money to see the movie that people are pissed off about. haha you guys need to get over your issues. i was adopted when i was 6 years old and i cannot WAIT to see this movie.
